Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Murray Walker commentating at the Brazilian GP of 1985: "Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus ________ rough ?". Complete the quote.

Answer: sounding

"Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough ?". Since when do you hear what the car sounds like with your eyes! Senna retired from this race on lap 48 with electrical glitches.
2. Murray at the 1995 Spanish GP: "and ________ is in fifth place". Who did he say was in fifth?

Answer: Eddie Jordan

"and Eddie Jordan is in fifth place" ... presumably he meant Eddie Irvine?! Walker made another mistake during the same race saying "Jean Todt is out, my goodness", he obviously meant Jean Alesi but Alesi did drive for the team that Jean Todt managed so ... Only a mix-up that Murray could ever make!
3. Murray at the end of the 1987 season. "This has been a great season for ________ , as he is known " . Complete this sentence.

Answer: Nelson Piquet

"This has been a great season for Nelson Piquet, as he is now known". His birth name was Nelson Maior [ Nelson Piquet Souto Maior ].
4. This quote comes from the 1996 Italian GP: "The Italian GP at ________ ". Where did Murray say the Italian GP was held?

Answer: Monaco

In the build-up to the 1996 Italian GP, Murray was looking forward to the challenge that the drivers would have to face with the tyres on the chicanes. He was saying what a great season it had been, mentioning the drenched race at Monaco. So Mr Walker being Mr Walker said "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the Italian Grand Prix at Monaco"! Perhaps he meant Monza?!
5. A well known quote from Murray Walker and James Hunt commentating on a Monaco GP. Murray: "There's flames coming from the back of Prost's car as he enters the swimming pool". What was James' reply to this comment?

Answer: Well that should put them out then.

Walker and Hunt had two very different commentating styles as shown in this conversation.
Murray: "And there are flames coming from the back of Prost's car as he enters the swimming pool."
James: "Well, that should put them out then."
The swimming pool is the name of a corner on the Monte Carlo street circuit because there is a swimming pool outside of the driving bounds of that corner! As they say, sarcasm is the highest form of wit!
6. "The Benetton handling superbly as ever; ________ have worked very very hard on this car since the beginning of the season." Complete the quote.

Answer: Williams

This quote is taken from the battle between Damon Hill (Williams) and Michael Schumacher (Benetton) in 1994 for the drivers championship. Murray Murray Murray, what would Formula 1 be without Murray Walker!
7. Murray in the 1998 Belgian GP: "It's raining heavily and ________ " . Finish this silly comment.

Answer: the track is getting wet

"It's raining heavily and the track is getting wet". The reason I said it was silly is because frankly, if it's raining the track wouldn't stay dry! As the years have passed, we've learnt to expect comments like this from Murray!
8. Taken from the 1996 Belgian GP: "And the Williams pit are getting ready for Hill, the tyre ________ are coming off"

Answer: coolers

"And the Williams pit are getting ready for Hill, the tyre coolers are coming off". Need I comment on this?! The tyre blankets are to warm the tyres, not to cool them down!
9. "And Ayrton Senna wins the ________ Monaco Grand Prix". Which year did Senna win according to Murray Walker?

Answer: 1999

"And Ayrton Senna wins the 1999 Monaco Grand Prix". I suppose many of you would've got this right considering you are doing a quiz on Murray Walker! This was actually in 1990, many people would've been shocked if Senna had won in 1999! At this point, Murray invents time travel!
10. Murray must have had his fans in fits! The Monaco GP 1992: "We're now on the 73rd lap and the next one will be the ________ " .

Answer: 74th

The Monaco GP has 78 laps. "We're now on the 73rd lap and the next one will be the 74th". Why thank you Murray, we never would have known!
11. A quote taken from the Monaco starting grid in 2001: "There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the grid today and ________ of them are Michael Schumacher"! Identify the missing word.

Answer: four

"There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the grid today and four of them are Michael Schumacher". You can see where Murray wanted to go with this but it just came out wrong! Before the 2001 Monaco GP, Schumi had won the race four times. On the grid, previous winners were Olivier Panis (1996), David Coulthard (2000), Mika Hakkinen (1998) and of course Michael Schumacher (1994, 1995, 1997 and 1999).
12. Murray made this comment after watching a replay of Schumacher driving into Villeneuve and retiring at the 1997 European GP: "And that just shows you how important the ________ is in Formula One racing". Complete this.

Answer: car

When they did a race review at the end of the European GP, Murray watched a replay, on board with Schumi, of him driving into Jacques Villeneuve at the Dry Sack Curve and retiring. Schumi failed to finish the race with his now (then) broken car. So Murray said: "And that just shows you how important the car is in Formula One racing", on account that Schumi lost the world championship because his car was broken!
13. "Well, he's world champion and we only get ____ of those each year". Complete this quote.

Answer: one

Well, he's world champion and we only get one of those each year". This quote was said at the end of the 1991 season, when Senna won his third title. Kind of hard to imagine two 1991 world champions I guess!
14. Murray getting excited at Hockenheim in 1988: "Senna 1st, Prost 2nd and Berger 3rd that makes up the top ____ ! ". Finish the quote.

Answer: four

"Senna 1st, Prost 2nd and Berger 3rd that makes up the top four!". Did he mean 'top three'?! No wonder he had lots of fans!
15. "As ever, I say the man you have to beat first of all in a team is ________ ". Finish this quote.

Answer: your team-mate

"As ever, I say the man you have to beat first of all in a team is your team-mate." Who else but your team-mate races with you?! Then again Murray did say during the 95 Spanish GP that Eddie Jordan was in fifth! I just want to mention a Martin Brundle quote at the 2001 US GP, Murray's last race commentating before retirement: "I'm sure I speak for many millions of people - tens of millions all around the world - when I say to you, thank you so much for what you've done for Formula 1 over the decades." Quite a sad moment for MW fanatics around the world.
