Michigan and Michigan State broke off from the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) to join the CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) in 1980. There never was a conference called the Big Ten hockey conference, though there was, at a time, a WCHA comprised of all Big Ten teams, and there never was a Midwest hockey conference.
2. Who was the standout player that won the Player of the Year award and the National Championship for the Golden Gophers, in the 2001-2002 season?

Answer: Jordan Leopold

Leopold won the Hobey Baker (player of the year) in 2001-2002 as a defenseman. Pohl was the nation's leading scorer in that season, Vanek was a star for the Gophers in the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 season, and Broten won the first Hobey Baker award in 1980-1981.
3. Minnesota won back to back championships in 2002 and 2003. What other team won three in a row from 1951 to 1953?
