Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was never a conference in NCAA division 1 hockey?

Answer: BCHA

WCHA is the Western Collegiate Hockey Association including Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Colorado. CCHA is the Central Collegiate Hockey Association including mostly teams from Michigan and Ohio. Hockey East is mainly New England area schools.
2. Who set a record for the most points in a single season in 1987?

Tony Hrcac scored 116 points in the 1987 season to lead the league. He led the North Dakota Fighting Sioux to its 5th national championship.
3. Many people don't know that Brett Hull played NCAA hockey. For which team did he play?

Answer: Minnesota Duluth

Although Hull doesn't hold any NCAA records, he did score 52 goals in 1986 which landed him as number 8 on the single season goals list. He retired from the NHL as the 3rd highest goal scorer, behind only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky.
4. What goalie set a record for both save percentage and goals against average for a single season in 2004?

Answer: Jimmie Howard

Howard, who played for the Maine Blackbears, put up an impressive .956% save percentage and a 1.19 GAA. He was drafted 64th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2003 NHL entry draft. Rick DiPietro made 77 saves in one game. Ryan Miller set a career shutout record with 26, and Robb Stauber set a career saves mark at 1,711.

Answer: Gordie Peterkin

Peterkin scored an amazing 13 points in one game, tallying 4 goals and 9 assists for Rensselaer on Dec 2 1952 vs. Springfield. The final score of the game was 18-0. Although NCAA hockey was not as competative back then, leading to some pretty severe mismatches, 13 points is still an impressive number which may never be broken.
6. New Jersey Devils forward John Madden broke what NCAA record by the end of his collegiate career in 1997?

Answer: Shorthanded goals

While playing for Michigan in the middle and late 1990s, Madden broke the record for both single season and career shorthanded goals, 10 and 23 respectively.
7. What goalie set a record for the most consecutive minutes without a goal against, with 375 minutes in 1994?

Answer: Blaine Lacher

Playing for Lake Superior State in 1994, Lacher amassed a jaw dropping 375 straight minutes without letting a puck past him. That's just shy of 19 periods, or more than 6 full games in a row. To give some perspective, the great NHL goaltender Ken Dryden's best streak was 168 minutes, less than half of Lacher's record.

This was while playing for a Cornell team that was so dominant, they had a record of 105-4-1 over a period of 4 years!
8. Which team won three separate back-to-back national championships in 1960-61, 1968-69, and again in 2004-05?

Answer: Denver

Other teams to do it were Boston University and Michigan.

Answer: North Dakota

Ralph Engelstad, a business mogul who played for the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota, financed the second, extremely impressive Engelstad arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota in the early 2000s. It is arguably the most extravagant arena in the country featuring all leather bleacher seats and marble floors.
10. What goalie, ending his career in 1997 set a record for most wins in a NCAA career, with 127?

Answer: Marty Turco

Steve Shields directly preceded Turco at Michigan and won 111 games. Karl Goehring had 80 wins for North Dakota. Garth Snow won 66 for Maine, but had the highest winning percentage thanks to the 1993 team which showcased future NHL stars Paul Kariya and Mike Dunham.
