O.J. Simpson rushed for 2,003 yards in 1973, while playing for the Buffalo Bills. The NFL played 14 game seasons from 1961 to 1977.
2. Who was the first NFL player with 400 or more carries in a season?

Answer: James Wilder

James Wilder had 407 carries in 1984, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The other three also had 400 or more carries, Dickerson in 1986, Anderson in 1998, and George in 2000.
3. The 1922 season: who was the first player to lead the National Football League in rushing?

Answer: Al Elliott

Elliott rushed for 419 yards on 85 carries for the 1922 Racine Legion. In 1920 and 1921, the league was known as the American Professional Football Conference, in 1922 the name was changed to the National Football League.
