Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first 1000-yard rusher in the NFL?

Answer: Beattie Feathers

Beattie Feathers gained 1,004 yards on just 101 carries in 1934 for the Chicago Bears, an average of 9.9 yards an attempt.
2. Which of the following, made a 98 yard punt in the NFL?

Answer: Steve O'Neal

An average punter for the New York Jets, Steve O'Neal somehow boomed a 98-yard punt on September 21, 1969, against the Denver Broncos. It traveled from his own 1 yard line down to the Broncos' 1.
3. In 1965, Bob Timberlake of the New York Giants set an all-time record for field goal futility in a season (minimum 10 attempts), making just one kick. How many did he attempt?

Answer: 15

In Timberlake's only season in the league, the backup QB from Michigan who served as the Giants' emergency kicker, made just 1 of 15 field goals, although he made 21 of 22 extra points.
4. In 1977, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers set an post-merger record for offensive futility, scoring just 7.4 points per game, despite putting up 33 and 17 points in their final two games. How many points did their leading scorer, kicker Alan Leavitt, have on the year?

Answer: 20

During their 0-12 start, the Bucs scored a measly 53 points and were shut out 6 times. They threw just three touchdown passes all year, against 30 interceptions, and finished 2-12 with 103 points scored.
5. Although he didn't play in the "passing era", Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts had an amazing streak. How many consecutive games did he throw a touchdown pass in?

Answer: 47

The streak began in 1956, and ended in 1960, against the Los Angeles Rams. In 1980, Dan Marino had a 30 game streak.
6. Who set an NFL record for interceptions thrown in a game, with eight?

Answer: Jim Hardy

Jim Hardy of the Chicago Cardinals threw eight picks in a single game in 1950. However, at least he was resilient: he rebounded to throw six touchdown passes in his very next game.
7. Which of the following was the first to a record for over 70,000 career passing yards in Pro Football, when he retired?

Answer: Warren Moon

Although Dan Marino holds the NFL record with 61,361 yards, Moon threw for 21,228 yards in six CFL seasons and 49,325 yards in 17 NFL seasons for a record total of 70,553 yards (and 494 touchdowns).
8. Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints, and Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos shared the official NFL record for longest field goal, at 63 yards. However, a fellow Bronco, Ola Kimrin, kicked a longer field goal in a preseason game. How many yards was the little-known Kimrin's amazing kick?

Answer: 65

Kimrin kicked a 65 yard field goal on August 29, 2002, against the Seattle Seahawks. However, he was cut the following day, having failed to beat out Elam.
9. Before the 1957 NFL season, the head coach of the Detroit Lions announced at the "Meet the Lions" banquet, "I can't handle you guys and I quit." The Lions went on to win the NFL Championship, demolishing the Cleveland Browns 59-14 in the championship game. Who was this unfortunate coach who quit on the champions?

Answer: Parker

Talk about irony. However, Buddy Parker may have had the last laugh. That 1957 team was the last Lions team to win a championship throughout the 20th century.
10. In 1942, Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers caught an amazing 17 touchdown passes in only 11 games. What year was his record finally broken?

Answer: 1984

Hutson's record stood until Mark Clayton of the Miami Dolphins caught 18 touchdowns in 1984 (in 16 games). In 1942, Hutson caught 74 passes for 1,211 yards. That was more receptions than the entire Detroit Lions team, more yards than two of the ten teams, and his 17 TDs were more touchdown receptions than 6 of the ten NFL teams. Projected over a 16-game season, he would have had 108 receptions, 1,761 yards, and 25 TDs.
