Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During which season was overtime eliminated?

Answer: 1941-42

Overtime was eliminated in November 1941 due to war-time restrictions. It was re-instated some 40 years later.
2. Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion was the first NHL player to do what during the 1951-52 season?

Answer: Use a slapshot

It occurred in October of 1951.
3. The valuable tool known as video review was added at the conclusion of which season?

Answer: 1990-91

Its use has since expanded and the video review room, known as the "war room" is situated in Toronto at the Air Canada Center.
4. The iconic ice resurfacing machine, commonly known as the "Zamboni" was first used in March of which season?

Answer: 1954-55

The term "Zamboni" is actually internationally trademarked as it is the name of a brand of ice resurfacers, named after the inventor (Frank Zamboni). It is the equivalent of people who commonly say "pass me kleenex" when what is really meant is "pass me tissue paper".
5. The unparalleled Foster Hewitt had his broadcast first televised during which season?

Answer: 1952-53

Foster Hewitt was a staple of Hockey Night in Canada for 40 years, and retired from television broadcasts in 1963 and from radio broadcasts in 1968. He passed away at 82 in 1985. The current broadcasting gondola at the Air Canada Center (where the Toronto Maple Leafs play) is named after him.
6. Who was the first goalie to actually drop to the ice to make a save (it occurred in the 1954-55 season)?

Answer: Glenn Hall

This became a turning point in the evolution of how NHL goalies can make saves.
7. Which goalie got himself into the record books by being the first to score a goal?

Answer: Billy Smith

The goal was scored against the Colorado Rockies on November 28, 1979.
8. Bill Mosienko scored the fastest hat trick in NHL history during which season?

Answer: 1951-52

Mosienko scored 3 goals in 21 seconds. It is a record that has yet to be beat.
9. Most fans know that Maurice "Rocket" Richard was the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games, but who became the second one to accomplish the same feat?

Answer: Mike Bossy

Mike Bossy had a sensational career that was tragically cut short due to injuries. If it not for early retirement it is reasonable to think he would've been among the league's best ever leaders in goals, assists, and points. He scored less then 50 goals only once in 10 seasons. He accomplished the 50 goals in 50 games feat in January of 1981.
10. During which season was overtime re-instated?

Answer: 1983-84

The first game that went into overtime since its return, after an absence of 40 odd years, led to the New York Islanders defeating the Washington Capitals 8-7.
