Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A 1990s skater whose accomplishments may have been overshadowed by an attack laid upon her at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Answer: Nancy Kerrigan

Kerrigan's particular fame should very well be her skating; she won bronze in Albertville and silver in Lillehammer. In 1994, however, shortly before she would hit the ice at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, she was struck in the knee by a man with a police baton; the man would later be linked to fellow competitor Tonya Harding. Kerrigan would go pro after the Olympics in 1994; Harding would be somewhat shunned by the skating community.
2. While never a Gold Medal Olympian, he mastered the quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop.

Answer: Elvis Stojko

Born in Ontario, Canada, Stojko was a staple in the amateur Canadian skating scene throughout the 1990s, appearing in the Olympic Games in both Lillehammer and Nagano and winning silver. He would return to the Olympics one last time in 2002 (Salt Lake City) but would place 8th before going pro.

In 1997, he would become the first skater to land a quadruple-triple combo in competition, something which would be a benchmark for top skaters in the years to come.
3. Winner of the Gold Medal at the Innsbruck Olympics in 1976.

Answer: Dorothy Hamill

One of the main figures in U.S. skating in the 1970s, Hamill is credited with bringing new techniques to the ice while also showcasing the nation's prowess on the international stage. Hamill went pro in the late 1970s, shortly after her Gold Medal win, and went on to co-lead in the Ice Capades until it folded in the late-'80s.
4. Able to perform a backflip on the ice, he's a repeated survivor of cancer.

Answer: Scott Hamilton

Scott Hamilton was a bit of a showman when he had his long heyday on the ice both as an amateur in the 1970s and 1980s and a pro in the 1990s and 2000s. A Gold Medal winner at the Sarajevo Olympics in 1984, he was a four-time consecutive Gold Medal winner at the World Championships. Known for backflips and solid jumps, his career was marred, especially in later years, by a bout with testicular cancer and several brain tumour diagnoses. Nevertheless, he remained a common figure in the scene, appearing as a coach, a choreographer, a commentator, and an analyst, as well as the creator of the long-running pro skating tour 'Stars on Ice'.
5. Having retired in 2006, she was a nine-time U.S. figure skating champion (eight-time consecutive) in the 1990s-2000s.

Answer: Michelle Kwan

Winning silver in Nagano and bronze in Salt Lake City, Kwan was best known for her technical prowess, being able to perform a number of difficult moves (including spins, jumps, and spirals) and achieve consistent high scores. Kwan never went professional like many of her contemporaries, only retiring when she withdrew from the Turin Olympics in 2006.

She would proceed with diplomatic work for the United States government after her retirement.
6. One of the former hosts of TV's "Battle of the Blades", this Canadian male figure skater would go on to choreograph in his later years.

Answer: Kurt Browning

Though Kurt participated in three Olympic Winter Games he never placed on the podium. Nonetheless, he was a major force in the Canadian skating scene, becoming one of the most feature professional skaters of the 1990s touring with 'Stars on Ice' (amongst others).

Despite the poorer showing at the Olympics, he was a four-time Gold Medal winner at Worlds across the '80s and '90s. He would go on to try his hand at choreography for many years, planning programs for dozens of skaters including famous pairs Olympians Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. Browning was the first man to land a quadruple jump in competition, doing so in 1988.
7. Going pro in 1992, this skater was originally in a pairs program before winning Olympic gold as a singles skater in Albertville.

Answer: Kristi Yamaguchi

An accomplished competitor in only a seven year amateur career span, Yamaguchi went to one Olympic Games (1992 in Albertville) and won gold before going pro and touring with 'Stars on Ice'. Instead of competing further, Yamaguchi turned her attention to charitable efforts and other ventures including acting, writing, analysis, and a couple stints on "Dancing with the Stars".

Her previous pairs partner, Rudy Galindo, wouldn't be able to achieve the same heights in competitive mens singles.
8. Awarded the Order of Canada, he was in a rivalry with fellow skater Brian Boitano, losing to him in Calgary in 1988.

Answer: Brian Orser

Though Orser beat Boitano in Sarajevo in 1984, Boitano beat him in Calgary in 1988; Orser got silver on both occasions. Nevertheless, he was a force to be reckoned with, moving quickly into pros and skating at that level for decades while coaching new hopeful skaters in the sport.

His past students, also Olympic medallists, include Javier Fernández, Yuna Kim, and Adam Rippon. Throughout the 1980s, Orser was an eight-time consecutive winner of the mens singles competition at Canada Nationals.
9. The Gold Medal winner in Nagano, she was the youngest female skater to win top prize at any Olympic Games.

Answer: Tara Lipinski

Only 16 when she won the Olympic Gold Medal, Lipinski was a favourite, alongside Michelle Kwan, to win the gold in a highly contested field of competitors in Nagano. Following the win she would go pro very shortly thereafter, having achieved the top honour in skating.

She would become the youngest inductee to the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame and would continue her career in commentating alongside fellow celebrated skated Johnny Weir.
10. This Ukrainian-born male skater took the Gold Medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville.

Answer: Viktor Petrenko

Originally part of the Soviet skating team in the 1980s, it would take two Olympic Games before he would claim gold, doing so in Albertville in 1992 (he only got bronze in Calgary in 1988). Though his final Olympics (Lillehammer) wouldn't see a podium victory, he ended his amateur career on a high note with wins at Europeans, Skate America, and Nations Cup.

He would go on to coach future champion Johnny Weir alongside his wife, Nina, and become part of the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation.
