Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1927 Yankees found themselves in their fifth World Series. Which manager took the team to all five of these in 1927?

Answer: Miller Huggins

The others didn't come into the Yankees' lives until the 1930s, 1940s, and 1960s. Huggins took over team from Bill Donovan in 1918, two seasons before the arrival of the Babe to the Yankees. Huggins took the team to six World Series before he became ill in the 1929 season, was replaced by Art Fletcher, then died before the season ended.
2. The 1927 Yankees had some batting for sure, and saw Babe Ruth set a new record for hitting 60 home runs in the season. Who was the Yankee runner-up that hit 47 in the season?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others never played for the Yankees. To show the batting power of the 1927 Yankees, Ruth led the Majors with 60, then Gehrig with 47. The third place finisher with home runs in the AL was Yankee Tony Lazerri with only 18. Both combined, Ruth and Gehrig hit more home runs than many other Major League teams combined.
3. The 1927 Yankees had six pitchers win in double-figures in the season. How many of those won 20+ games?

Answer: 1

The only 20-game winner was Waite Hoyt. Hoyt went 22-7 in the season. To encore, he went 23-7 in 1928 to help the Yankees to another World Series appearance. The other pitchers to help the 1927 team were Wilcy Moore with his 19-7 record, Herb Pennock who went 19-8, Urban Shocker who was 18-6, Dutch Ruether who went 13-6, and George Pipgras who was 10-3.

The Yankees' season record was 110-44.
4. The 1927 season found two Yankee sluggers in a home run battle. Who was the first Yankee to hit 45 home runs in the season?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig hit his 45th in the season on September 6 1927 vs. Red Sox, while the Babe was sitting on 44 .. who scored his 45th later in that game! Ruth finished the season with 60 while Lou Gehrig finished with 47. Gehrig was the season's MVP in 1927 with his .373 batting average. The other two never played for the Yankees.
5. Who did the Yankees play in the 1927 World Series?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Giants was the only other NL team listed. The Yankees skunked the Pirates four games to none. The Yankees outscored them 23-10. Babe Ruth had six hits, two of them home runs, and batted .400 in the series. Four different Yankee pitchers each won a game.
6. The Yankees went 110-44, the first time the franchise had won 100 games in a season. The Philadelphia Athletics finished second, 19 games back. Which team finished last, 59 games behind the Yankees?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

None of the other teams existed in 1927. The Red Sox finished with a record of 51-103. The team hit 28 home runs, less than half of Babe Ruth's season total. It was Boston's third consecutive season of losing more than 100 games.
7. The attendance for the 1918 season was typical for the pre-Babe Ruth Yankee era. 282,047 fans watched the team finish fourth. The Babe arrived in 1920. What was the attendence in 1927?

Answer: 1,164,015

Over a million fans packed in to see the Yankees in the season, but it was not the first time. Upon the arrival of Ruth in 1920, the Polo Grounds attendance went to 1,289,422. The Babe Ruth Yankees hit the one million mark every season which led up to 1927, except for 1925. An amazing amount of fans in that era.
8. The Yankees had an amazing five of their eight starting regulars bat over .300 in the season. Which pitcher got into the act by hitting over .300 also?

Answer: Myles Thomas

The others never played for the Yankees. Thomas went 7-4 in the season and batted .333. Gehrig led the team with his .373 average, followed by Ruth and Earle Combs batting .356, and Bob Meusel hitting .337 in the season.
9. How many total 1927 Yankees were later inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: 7

The inductees were Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Babe Ruth, Waite Hoyt, and Herb Pennock. Manager Miller Huggins was also inducted.
10. Who led the team with the most hits in the season?

Answer: Earle Combs

Combs had 231 hits, Gehrig 218, Ruth 192, and Meusel had 174. Combs and Gehrig led the league in hits, and all four were in the top ten for batting average in the season. Ironically, Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, and Meusel, were also the top four strikeout victims in the league in 1927.
