Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following managers had the helm of a MLB team the most years?

Answer: John McGraw

McGraw mostly helmed the Giants for 34 seasons. Leo the Lip, the most famous of those listed, managed the Brooklyn Dodgers, then the NY Giants, the Chicago Cubs, and even the Houston ballclub to finish out his career the final two years. Durocher's record was 2008 wins and 1709 losses. Connie Mack is untouchable with his 53 seasons in charge.
2. Which of the following rookies did NOT hit 35 home runs in their rookie year?

Answer: Jose Canseco

York of the 1937 Tigers, Kittle of the 1983 Chicago White Sox, and Piazza of the Dodgers in 1993 all hit 35 home runs as a rookie. Canseco 'only' hit 33 in his rookie season with the Athletics.
3. When Ichiro Suzuki smacked 242 hits in his rookie season, whose rookie record did he break?

Answer: Lloyd Waner

All the players listed had over 200 hits in their rookie season, but it was Lloyd Waner who established the record in 1927 with 223 hits in his rookie year. Oliva smacked 217 in 1964 with the Twins, Kuenn of the Tigers in 1953 with 209, and the Yankee Clipper had 206 hits in 1936.
4. What was Stan Musial's batting average in his final year of Major League Baseball?

Answer: .255

Stan the Man retired from baseball in 1963 after over 20 years with the Cardinals. The only break in baseball was in 1945 when he provided military service. In his final year he was 86 for 337 with a batting average of .255. His lifetime average is .331 with a total of 3630 hits. He was definitely the 'Man'.
5. Which of the following catchers have NOT caught three no-hitters?

Answer: John Roseboro

All but Dodger catcher John Roseboro caught 3 no-hitters. The only famous 'hit' that Roseboro received was from the bat of Giant pitcher Juan Marichal. Torborg received 3 with Sandy Koufax and Bill Singer of the Dodgers and the great Nolan Ryan. Finally, Jim Hegan caught 3 with the Indians in a five year span. Johnson caught 3 in a Marlin's uniform.
6. What pitcher in the 20th Century was the last to lose a perfect game in the eighth inning or later?

Answer: Kevin Brown

On June 10, 1997, Brown then with the Florida Marlins hit pinch-hitter Marvin Bernard of the Giants with two out in the 8th inning on an 0-2 pitch. The Marlins won the game 9-0. Although credited with a no-hitter, Brown never forgot that pitch.
7. Who was the first Angel to win 20 games in a season?

Answer: Dean Chance

Chance went 20-9 for the Angels in 1964. Ryan was the only Angel to win 20 or more twice with the club posting a record of 21-16 in 1973 and 22-16 in 1974.
8. When Lou Brock broke the season record for stolen bases, what Cardinal number did he wear?

Answer: 20

Brock presented the number 20 every year as a Cardinal. He provided 3 Cardinal seasons with 50 steals and 200 hits. The record that he broke belonged to Dodger Maury Wills.
9. What MLB team had two managers die in the same year?

Answer: Detroit

In 1966, manager Charlie Dressen suffered his second heart attack on May 16 and later died, then interim manager Bob Swift died of lung cancer. Frank Skaff replaced Swift. The Tigers finished the year with a record of 88-74 which was good enough for third place in the 10 team American League.
10. Who was the last Milwaukee Braves pitcher to win 20 games in a season?

Answer: Tony Cloninger

Cloninger was 24-11 in 1965 with Milwaukee. Although Spahn was a multiple 20 game winner, he never topped Cloninger's mark of 24. Spahn's last 20-win season with Milwaukee was in 1963 when he went 23-7 in a stellar year for the Braves.
