Bassett, later was a Head Linesman for the conference. He attended Penn State during the late 1970s. Dick Honig was the Referee that Joe Paterno grabbed after their 2002 game with Iowa. Hoskins was Penn State's first coach, serving from 1892-1895, and Newton was the second, serving from 1896-1898, but Fennell was the first coach to have no other duties at the university, other than coaching the football team (he did so from 1904-1908). Engle was coach from 1950-1965 and when he retired, Joe Paterno took over.

The 2003 capacity of 107,282 made it the second largest stadium in the country, but when it was built, Beaver Stadium's capacity was less then half that.

Pink and Black were agreed upon by the student body in 1887. The pink faded to white and the black was changed to navy blue for what would become the school's 2003 colors. The blue/white scheme was announced on March 18, 1890. Needless to say, it was a good change.

After beating North Carolina State in 1978, the Lions were Ranked #1 for the first time in school history. The did not win the National Championship--they lost to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. In 1982, Penn State was never ranked #1 until the final polls, after beating Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to claim their first National Title.
19. Who was Penn State's Homecoming opponent in 1994?

Answer: Ohio State

Penn State was ranked #1 in both polls coming into this game. Penn State won 63-14. They dropped to the #2 spot in the AP poll. Penn State ended the year with a perfect record, but were ranked #2 behind also undefeated Nebraska.
20. Against which team did Joe Paterno win his 200th game?

Answer: Bowling Green

Joe Pa won #200 against the mighty Falcons in 1987. Interestingly enough, he won #300 against Bowling Green as well in 1998. Win #324 (to break Bear Bryant's all-time wins record) came against another Ohio team. This one looks a bit better in the record books, as it came against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
