Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Patrick Kluivert were born on the same day.

Answer: True

July 1st, 1976 was the day both players came into this world.
2. Who was the first Dutch player to reach the landmark of 100 internationals?

Answer: Frank de Boer

The youngest one of the twins got his 100th cap against the Czech Republic on March 29th, 2003. Aron Winter has played 84 internationals, Ruud Krol collected 83 caps, and Johan Cruyff never reached 50 internationals. He has only got 48 caps under his belt.
3. How did striker Beb Bakhuys win eternal fame in Holland?

Answer: By scoring with a diving header

Bakhuys did that on March 11th, 1934. He did not consider this goal to be his best ever, but it captured the imagination of the public anyway. It was the equalizer after Belgium had taken the lead early in the match. Bakhuys went on to score two more goals in a 9-3 win for Holland.
4. Which of these four facts about the first international between Holland and Belgium (4-1 to Holland), is not true?

Answer: It marked the first dismissal of a Dutch player

That happened some sixty years later. As to the other answers: the man who scored four goals was Eddy de Neve. Three of them came in extra time as the match had ended 1-1. The one Belgian goal was scored by Dutchman Ben Stom (Stom is Dutch for stupid).
5. You won't find the famous 2-1 win of a Dutch side over France in 1953 officially documented. Why not?

Answer: The match wasn't recognised by the Dutch FA.

On March 12th, 1953, Dutch professionals played the French national team in a benefit match for the victims of the flood disaster a month before. They couldn't represent Holland officially, as the Dutch FA, fiercely opposed to professionalism, had banned them.

Therefore the Dutch side had to play in an alternative strip (red, white and blue instead of orange) and had to listen to an alternative anthem. But it did not prevent them from beating France 2-1, a win that set the ball rolling towards professionalism.
6. Who was the first Surinamese player to represent The Netherlands?

Answer: Humphrey Mijnals

There were only a handful of Surinamese players in Holland at the start of the sixties. Humphrey Mijnals was the only one of them considered good enough to be selected. He played three matches, each of them in 1960. The first match was against Bulgaria, which produced a 4-2 win for Holland. Mijnals was also involved in the match against Belgium, which Holland lost 2-1. Finally Mijnals came on as a substitute in the 4-3 win over Surinam. Mijnals never scored a goal.
7. No team ever reached double figures against Holland.

Answer: False

On december 21st, 1907, at Darlington, England beat Holland in emphatic fasion. Though fielding amateurs only, England were simply too good for the Dutch. After 5-1 at half-time, England won 12-2. Imagine what would have happened if England had fielded professionals!
8. Who was the first player to be dismissed in an orange shirt?

Answer: Johan Cruyff

It happened on November 6th, 1966 in a lost match against Czechoslovakia (1-2). Referee Rudi Glöckner send the great man off the pitch, apparently for hitting him. Cruyff was suspended for twelve months by the Dutch FA, a penalty that was reduced later on.
9. The 1988 European title was the first big success for the Dutch national team.

Answer: False

In 1920 The Netherlands played at the Olympics in Belgium. After losing to eventual winners Belgium, the Dutch had to play for the bronze against Spain. They lost 3-1. However, Chechoslovakia came to the rescue, by walking off the pitch in the final against Belgium. The Czechs were disqualified and stripped of a medal, which meant a silver medal for Spain and a bronze medal for Holland.
10. What was the first country Holland played against other than Belgium?

Answer: England

After four matches against Belgium, Holland played an amateurs only England side in The Hague. Nevertheless the visitors were too good for Holland, winning 1-8.
