3. The Czech Republic came in second with 27 points in UEFA Group 1. This was not enough to be one of the two "best second placed countries", so they had to qualify from the play-offs. Which country lost both legs of the play-off match 1-0 against the Czech Republic?

Answer: Norway

Pavel Nedved came out of retirement and returned to the Czech squad for the play-off matches against Norway, to help them qualify. He didn't play during the qualifying group because he had retired from international football to concentrate on his then club Juventus.
4. UEFA Group 2 turned out to be a very surprising group. The 2004 European champions Greece and the 1992 European Champions Denmark both failed to qualify from this group. Ukraine won the group and qualified for the first time in their history. Which star player inspired his country with 6 goals and is arguably one of Ukraine's all-time best players ?

Answer: Andriy Shevchenko

Shevchenko started his career with Dinamo Kiev and then joined Italian giants AC Milan. Ukraine was the first team to qualify from the European preliminaries.
5. One of the biggest upsets in Europe came from the play-off game between Turkey and Switzerland. Turkey finished third in the 2002 World Cup, but failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. After finishing second in UEFA Group 2 behind Ukraine, Turkey went on to lose on away goals against Switzerland in the play-offs. What was the total score of the 2 play-off games between Turkey and Switzerland?

Answer: 4-4

Switzerland was considered to be an easy opponent, but eventually qualified for the World Cup on away goals after winning 2-0 at home and loosing 4-2 in Turkey.
6. Portugal eased trough UEFA Group 3 without losing a game, accumulating 30 points in the progress. Which Portuguese striker scored 11 goals in the preliminaries, making him the top scorer for the European zone?

Answer: Pauleta

Answer: Slovakia

Slovakia came very close to qualifying for the World Cup Finals but had the worst draw of the play-offs. They had to play against Spain, who proved to be too good for a brave Slovakian side.
8. UEFA Group 4 turned out to be a real thriller. The 1998 World champions and 2000 European champions France had to wait until the very last game of the group preliminaries to secure a qualification. True or false: before the last match day, a total of 4 countries still had a chance to win the group and qualify automatically.

Answer: False

This is not true since Israel could only have second on the last matchday. Before the last game, France wasn't even sure of second place, and could have been eliminated. Luckily, they won their last game against Cyprus and Switzerland didn't win against Ireland. If the Suisse would have won against Ireland, France would have had to play the play-offs (instead of Switzerland).

Some veteran stars returned to the French side after retiring to secure qualification after the poor start they made in the group, including Zinedine Zidane and Lillian Thuram.
9. Switzerland qualified for the World Cup Finals by beating Turkey in the play-offs. Who coached Switzerland to second place in UEFA Group 4 and eventually into Germany?

Answer: Koebi Kuhn

Switzerland's last appearance in a world cup previous to 2006 was in 1994 -- they surprisingly survived the group stage, but lost in the second round against Spain. Roy Hodgson was the coach at that time. Sforza was one of the star players.
10. This country is one of Europe's best and most successful. They'd previously won the FIFA World Cup three times before the start of the 2006 World Cup, though the last one dates back to 1982. Always performing well on big occasions, they are always outsiders for the title. They are known for their very defensive style. Which team, that plays in (sky)blue, am I looking for?

Answer: Italy

Italy qualified relatively easily from UEFA Group 5 accumulating 23 points, 5 more then runner up Norway. Marcello Lippi coached them during the preliminaries. Italy had won the World Cup in 1934, 1938 and 1982. Interestingly enough, they have never won a World Cup outside of Europe. They won it at home in 1934, in France in 1938 and then in Spain in 1982.
11. Norway finished second in UEFA Group 5 with 18 points; earning them a place in the play-offs. Which country, nicknamed "The Tartan Army", ended up third behind Norway, missing out on the finals once again?

Answer: Scotland

Answer: Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard, who played at Chelsea during the preliminaries, was instrumental for England in their road to qualification. England have won the World Cup once, in 1966, beating West-Germany 4-2 after extra time. The 1966 World Cup was held in England and remained England's only major soccer trophy.
13. UEFA Group 7 was of great interest to me as my home country was drawn into this difficult group. Unfortunately, Belgium failed to qualify for the first time since 1982. Which team won this group with 22 points and secured their place in Germany?

Answer: Luis Aragones

At the time, Spain was considered the best European football nation that hasn't won the World Cup. They usually qualify with ease but tend to fail on the big stages. They only made it to the last 4 on one occasion, back in 1950.
[ Spain shed this reputation with its World Cup win in 2010 ]
15. In UEFA Group 8 two teams, Croatia and Sweden, tied for first place with 24 points. Croatia won the group because of their better results against Sweden. This didn't matter much as Sweden also qualified as one of two "best second placed" teams.

Answer: True

Both Sweden and Croatia qualified for Germany 2006 from this group. Croatia did win the group, but Sweden also qualified automatically. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored 8 goals for Sweden, and Darijo Srna and Dado Prso were joined top scorer for Croatia with 5 goals each.
