Immediately after the World Cup in July 2006, Sven-Goran Eriksson retired as England manager and was replaced by Steve McClaren. McClaren decided to go in a new direction and John Terry was announced as England's new captain. David Beckham struggled to make the team, and announced his retirement from international soccer later in 2006.
