Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What part did Juan Carlos Cardenas play in Scottish football history?

Answer: He scored the goal for Racing Club of Argentina that stopped Celtic from becoming World Club Champions in 1967

His goal scored in the playoff which was held at the Estadio Centenario in Uruguay, won the Intercontinental Cup for Racing Club of Argentina. In fact, it was another strike from Cardenas in 93 minutes that took the two-legged final to a third game, and denied Celtic from becoming the first British team to be World Club Champions.
2. Who scored for the USSR at Hampden Park, scored in two European Cup Finals, and also scored in a World Club Championship Final?

Answer: Tommy Gemmell

An aggressive attacking fullback, Tommy played his best football for Celtic after the arrival of Jock Stein. He had a ferocious left foot shot and was known for his blasted penalty kicks. Tommy was also the first Celtic player to score in the European Cup when he struck against FC Zurich in 1966. Obviously, Tommy's goal for the USSR was an own goal.
3. Which 2 clubs compete in the oldest existing derby game in Scotland?

Answer: Hibs and Hearts

Hearts were founded in 1874 a year before Hibs in 1875. Rangers were established in 1873, a good 15 years before arch-rivals Celtic in 1888. Dundee burst into being in 1893, but had to wait until 1909 to be joined by near neighbours Dundee United, originally named Dundee Hibernian. Clyde was formed in 1877, and Queen's Park Scotland's oldest club, started it all off in 1867.

Hearts won the first Edinburgh derby 1-0 back in 1875.
4. Who was the first player to win two Italian and two Scottish League winners medals?

Answer: Sergio Porrini

Porrini won two Italian League winners medals during his four years at Juventus. After moving to Glasgow Rangers in 1997, he gathered two Scottish League winners' medals under manager Dick Advocaat.
5. St. Andrews beat Old Caledonians to become the first champions of which football mad country?

Answer: Argentina

Yes, it was exiled Scots that fostered football in South America. Not just in Argentina, but also in Brazil and Uruguay.
6. Who was the only player that took part in the classic World Cup game of 1970 in Mexico between England and West Germany, and went on to play for a Scottish club later in his career?

Answer: Peter Bonetti

Bonetti turned out 5 times for Dundee United in 1979, but his golden spell came during the 1960s and early 1970s whilst playing with Chelsea. Unfortunately for Bonetti, he will always be remembered for that quarterfinal in Mexico, where England threw away a two goal lead and eventually lost 3 - 2 to West Germany.

He was harshly criticised for his performance that day, unjustifiably in many people's opinion.
7. Who was the former Hibernian player who scored on the very first program of the BBC's Match of the Day, way back on 22 August 1964?

Answer: Joe Baker

Joe Baker was the first player to represent England without having played for an English League club. Although having a broad Scots accent, he was born in Liverpool but brought up in Motherwell. He turned out on eight occasions for England.
8. Which television pundit coined the phrase, "They'll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight"?

Answer: Sam Leitch

After a famous Raith Rovers victory, David Coleman, Frank Bough, and Jimmy Hill could all have been forgiven for uttering this statement as they are all English. However, Sam Leitch was a Scots football television presenter who should have known that Raith Rovers come from Kirkcaldy in Fife, not a town called Raith.
9. Who was the first goalkeeper to win the Scottish Football Writers Association Player of the Year Award?

Answer: Ronnie Simpson, Celtic

Ronnie Simpson of Celtic won it in 1967, He was preceded by John Greig (Rangers) and succeeded by Gordon Wallace (Raith Rovers). Alan Rough won the award in 1981 whilst with part-time Partick Thistle.
10. In the 135 years of the Scottish Cup (1874-2009), which of these famous clubs failed to win the trophy three years in a row?

Answer: Celtic

Rangers have achieved this three times between 1934-1936, 1948-1950, and 1962-1964. Queen's Park won the first three Scottish Cups from 1874-1876 and then again from 1880-1882. Vale of Leven won the three cups in between from 1877-1879, whilst Aberdeen were victorious on three occasions from 1982-1984. Celtic have been very unlucky, as after winning the trophy in 1907 and 1908, they reached the final again in 1909. Unfortunately after two drawn games against Rangers, the crowd rioted suspecting match rigging and the cup was withheld that year.

In 1990, Celtic were once again looking for three consecutive victories but lost out 9-8 to Aberdeen, to become the first Scottish club to lose in the final on penalty kicks.
