Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which kicker missed a 47-yard field goal with seconds remaining in Super Bowl XXV, that would have given his Bills the title?

Answer: Scott Norwood

The other kickers retired 10 years earlier. Instead of Buffalo winning it all, the Giants pulled out the squeaker, 20-19. The Giants defense weren't tired because the Bills had the ball for less than 20 minutes in the game. Scott lasted only one more season with the Bills and the NFL, retiring in 1991.
2. This coach was fired just after the 1968 season after going 10-3-1. His players rebelled in the action, so the owners rehired him. Two years later he was fired again, and many players tried to jump ship to follow him to the Redskins. Who was this coach?

Answer: George Allen

The others were all Redskin head coaches, but all came after Allen's reign. After much success with the Redskins, the Rams rehired him for the 1978 season, but fired him after only two preseason games. George was replacing Chuck Knox, but Ray Malavasi replaced Allen for the 1978 season.
3. Which Redskin quarterback's career ended in a 1985 "ABC's Monday Night Football" game, when the Giants defense broke his leg?

Answer: Joe Theismann

In a much-publicized replay even years later, Theismann's playing career ended in Week 11 of the 1985 season. The Redskins won the game 23-21, but lost a 12-season veteran and two-time Pro Bowler.
4. This 14-season running back with great hands, went to five Super Bowls with three different teams. His Colts lost in Super Bowl III, and lost with Dallas in Super Bowl X and XIII. He won with the Steelers in IX, and again with Dallas in XII. Who was this Illinois running back?

Answer: Preston Pearson

Although he saw five Super Bowls, he never was selected to a Pro Bowl. Preston retired in 1980.
5. Deacon Jones of the Los Angeles Rams played his final season in 1971. In that season, he helped break in a rookie at defensive end, who would miss only one game in his 13-season career, and go to seven Pro Bowls. Who wore this number 85 jersey?

Answer: Jack Youngblood

The others were all wide receivers. Youngblood's only game missed was in his final 1984 season. Jack went to many NFC Championship games, but made the Super Bowl only once. Super Bowl XIII saw the Steelers defeat the Rams, 31-19.
6. In 1967, Cardinal Jim Bakken set a record for kicking seven field goals in a game. In 1989, the record was duplicated by which Minnesota Viking and former Bronco kicker, who also led the league that season, just before the Vikings let him go?

Answer: Rich Karliss

The other kickers never played for either the Broncos or Vikings. Karliss played from 1982-1988 before joining the Vikings. His league-leading 31 wasn't good enough for the Vikings, so he joined the Lions for his final season in 1990.
7. Which year saw the first NFL draft?

Answer: 1936

A former NFL Commissioner, Bert Bell, was credited for coming up with the idea of drafting from colleges. There were nine rounds in this draft, and the Philadelphia Eagles selected University of Chicago running back, Jay Berwanger with the very first pick.
8. From 1984-1988, I was a Cleveland Brown running back, and my fumble cost the Browns the 1987 AFC Championship. The following season I was in a Redskin uniform, then had two 1000-yard seasons. I retired as a Raven in 1997. Who am I?

Answer: Earnest Byner

After five seasons with the Redskins, the Browns let Byner come back to Cleveland in 1994 where he played two seasons. His two 1000-yard rushing seasons in 1990 and 1991, gave him his only two Pro Bowls.
9. Which 1997 Washington Redskin quarterback and on national television, scored a first-half touchdown, then almost knocked himself out by head-butting the end zone wall in celebration?

Answer: Gus Frerotte

The embarrassed Frerotte was replaced by Jeff Hostetler to helm the Redskins. Gus played for five seasons in Washington before playing for Detroit, Denver, Cincinnati, Minnesota, an Miami.
10. My career lasted only five seasons, all with New England. I led the Patriots in 1977 with receptions. In a 1978 preseason game, the Raiders' Jack Tatum left me paralyzed and my career was over. Who am I?

Answer: Darryl Stingley

Darryl led the Patriots in 1977 with 39 catches for 657 yards. Stingley saw only one postseason game in 1976, in a loss to the Raiders also. Another NFL tragedy.
