Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Lee Sharpe born in May 1971?

Answer: Worcestershire

Lee was born in Halesowen, Worcestershire to be exact. Halesowen is a town in the West Midlands in England. Apart from Lee, Robert Plant of the band Led Zeppelin was been brought up there.
2. Lee is perhaps best known for his tenure with Manchester United, playing for them for eight years until 1996. Which team did he play for before Manchester United?

Answer: Torquay

Sharpe joined Manchester United from Torquay as a youngster in 1988. He made only 14 appearances, scoring three goals in Torquay colours before moving to Manchester United in June of that year. Lee was an Aston Villa supporter when he joined Torquay but never played for them during his entire career.

He eventually did play for both Bradford (1999-2002) and Exeter (2002). He originally was on loan to Bradford from Manchester United in March of 1999 but signed a permanent deal with them by the end of the season.

He had another loan spell to Portsmouth in 2001 but after his contract expired with Bradford, he transferred to Exeter.
3. Sharpe's first goal in Manchester United colours came in September 1989 during a 5-1 dismantling of the opposition. Who did he score it against?

Answer: Millwall

A whole year after making his Manchester United debut against West Ham, Sharpe managed to find the net during this home fixture against Millwall. Sharpe also scored a hat-trick against Arsenal during a fourth round League Cup match which United won 6-2. Sharpe rates this as one of his fondest memories in his entire career.

This, coupled with some brilliant performances during the 1990-91 season, helped cement his spot as United's first choice left winger.
4. After Lee's glory spell at Manchester United, he moved to another club despite the knee troubles that had kept him on the sidelines. What was that club?

Answer: Leeds United

In the summer of 1996, Leeds United made their record signing by securing the services of Sharpe. He made 26 league appearances in the 1996-97 season, scored five goals but once again, a knee injury before the 1997-98 season prevented him from playing the whole season.
5. Against which team did Sharpe score his final league goal for Manchester United?

Answer: Blackburn Rovers

This final goal came in February 1996 against Blackburn. Sharpe scored the only goal of the match. This helped United to maintain the pressure on the league leaders Newcastle in the race for the title. Manchester United won the FA Cup that season with Sharpe scoring another two goals to aid them.
6. After a loan spell to Sampdoria (1998), he returned to England in March 1999. The next (and final) time he left the country to play for another club was in 2003. Which country did he move to?

Answer: Iceland

Sharpe left for the club Grindavik in Iceland in 2003 from Exeter. He announced his retirement shortly afterwards at the age of 32. He returned briefly in early 2004 to play for smaller clubs until he announced his retirement for good.
7. Sharpe was capped eight times for England.

Answer: True

He received his eight caps between 1991 and 1995. Sharpe had established himself as a left winger at Manchester United so it was only a matter of time before he got a call up to the national squad. Although he made it to the squad, Sharpe couldn't replace regular left winger John Barnes.

Unfortunately, subsequent injury coupled with viral illness was enough to lose him his place in the squad.
8. Sharpe was part of the Manchester United squad that lifted the 1990-91 European Cup Winners Cup. He scored to make it a draw and gain some ground in the home leg of the semi-final. Which team did he score against?

Answer: Legia Warsaw

The goal that Sharpe scored brought the score to 1-1. The crucial semi-final stage required United to gain some ground at home while play the best they could away from home to ensure a reasonable victory. Sharpe's thunderous left- footed strike flew into the top corner of the net, couldn't gain United the upper hand but it certainly saved them from defeat.
9. In August 2005, Sharpe published his autobiography. What was it called?

Answer: "My Idea of Fun"

In "My Idea of Fun", Sharpe detailed his time as a football player and also his eventual status as a celebrity, having participated in reality shows.
10. In 2007, Sharpe appeared in a pub on British TV broadcasters ITV's soap, "Coronation Street". He appeared as a taxi driver from Manchester.

Answer: True

The pub is known as The Rovers Return. It isn't real, though. Lee was just an extra.
