Sick of Major Sports? Trivia Quiz

Why is it that all I ever see on shows like Sportscenter is football, hockey, baseball, basketball, and an occasional share of golf, tennis and Nascar? Perhaps it is time for some lesser-known sports to gain some recognition.

Question 1 of 10
1. Honestly, if I wanted to see as much fighting as there is in the NHL, I'd watch WWE. However, there is one other ice sport that happened to catch my eye. I saw a large stone sliding along the ice and two people seemingly mopping the ice. I heard the commentator use such terminology as "keen ice," and "chip and lie." What sport was I watching? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Tennis, in my humble opinion, is quite overrated. I truly see no pleasure in watching two people hitting a small yellow ball at each other. However, the other day, I saw two people playing a sport that I found much more interesting. They used a net, which was raised higher than the tennis net, two rackets, and something which resembled a ball yet they told me that it is called a shuttlecock, but that many people refer to it as a birdie. What is the name of this fascinating sport? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. How many of you have ever watched a swimming competition? Doesn't it get very boring? Handball, a much lesser known sport than swimming, is still not very exciting. Yet when we mix the two sports together, we get a great game played in the water, where players try to throw the ball in a goal. See what happens when you put two sports together to make one. What is the name of this very fun sport? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Baseball? Definitely not as fun as it used to be, but there is a sport similar to it that it much more entertaining. Very popular in places like England, India, Zimbabwe, and Australia, this sport involves terminology such as batting and bowling. There are also players such as the batsman. What sport am I referring to? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. I must say that golf is extremely boring. The other day, however, we played a game that resembled miniature golf, but involved using mallets rather than clubs. Also, the ball was much larger and heavier, and rather than attempt to hit it into a hole, the purpose is to send the ball through a series of wickets. Which lawn game am I referring to? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. While I see a lot of fishing on television, who really wants to spend their time watching people try to catch fish. However, a different much cooler sport involves people in a kind of mix between a boat and a raft. The sport involves people paddling, but only on one side of the boat, switching sides every couple of minutes. What sport is this? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Time to pick on baseball. I'm sorry, I just don't see where the fun is in swinging a bat around? However, I noticed that there is a different sport where people use metal swords to strike their opponents. They do of course, wear special jackets and masks for protection. What sport is this?

Answer: (One Word Only)
Question 8 of 10
8. Ballet (nothing against it, but who would think of this as much fun?) and swimming. I'm really not a fan of either of these, as they bore me far too much. However, putting them together gives us a sport that is sometimes nicknamed "water ballet." Can you identify this sport? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Nothing against cross country skiing, but it truly gets very boring after watching it for a while, so let us mix it up with something. I know, how about target shooting. When we mix these two, we get a sport where competitors must shoot and then race 10 kilometers. What sport is this?

Answer: (One Word Only (watch spelling))
Question 10 of 10
10. This exhilarating sport involves players using a curved basket to launch a ball against the front wall with enough speed that their opponent cannot catch it or return it. What is the name of this sport? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Curling

Doesn't this seem a bit safer than people checking each other into the boards? This sport may bore you when you watch, but try playing sometime. It seems like a mix between shuffleboard and bowling on ice.

Answer: Badminton

Surprisingly enough, it is estimated that about 200 million people worldwide play badminton. The deadliest attacking stroke in badminton is called a smash. The hardest smash ever recorded was at over 160mph. Well, that certainly adds some excitement to the game.

Answer: Water Polo

In the 2000 Olympic games, Hungary won the men's gold medal, Russia took the silver, and Yugoslavia won bronze. Australia took home the women's gold medal, with the United States taking silver and Russia taking bronze. I really enjoyed watching water polo a lot more than I ever enjoyed watching soccer or any other sports that involve a ball and a goal.
4. Baseball? Definitely not as fun as it used to be, but there is a sport similar to it that it much more entertaining. Very popular in places like England, India, Zimbabwe, and Australia, this sport involves terminology such as batting and bowling. There are also players such as the batsman. What sport am I referring to?

Answer: Cricket

A very popular sport elsewhere around the world, but not very popular in North America, where baseball seems to take priority.

Answer: Croquet

Fairly difficult, but most enjoyable.
6. While I see a lot of fishing on television, who really wants to spend their time watching people try to catch fish. However, a different much cooler sport involves people in a kind of mix between a boat and a raft. The sport involves people paddling, but only on one side of the boat, switching sides every couple of minutes. What sport is this?

Answer: Canoeing

The first canoe was built by the Carib Indians of the Carribean Islands. The word "canoe" was first spelled "kenu," which meant dugout. In 1924, canoeing became a demonstration sport in the Olympics, but did not become an official Olympic sport until 1936. Now I ask you, doesn't this seem a bit more fun than catching fish?
7. Time to pick on baseball. I'm sorry, I just don't see where the fun is in swinging a bat around? However, I noticed that there is a different sport where people use metal swords to strike their opponents. They do of course, wear special jackets and masks for protection. What sport is this?

Answer: Fencing

Fencing can be thought of as the Three Musketeers, protective clothing, and a scoring system all put together. It involves a large variety of attacks, such as the "parry" or "thrust." This sport is quite exciting, and is shown in movies a lot, but unfortunately gets little public recognition.
8. Ballet (nothing against it, but who would think of this as much fun?) and swimming. I'm really not a fan of either of these, as they bore me far too much. However, putting them together gives us a sport that is sometimes nicknamed "water ballet." Can you identify this sport?

Answer: Synchronized swimming

In synchronized swimming, the athletes that are competing do dance moves in the water that have been choreographed to music. Pretty interesting, and requires quite a bit of skill, as participants need to have good body strength, grace, and some swimming ability.
9. Nothing against cross country skiing, but it truly gets very boring after watching it for a while, so let us mix it up with something. I know, how about target shooting. When we mix these two, we get a sport where competitors must shoot and then race 10 kilometers. What sport is this?

Answer: Biathlon

In biathlon, competitors must stop at four areas to shoot at an electronic target, and then race 10km. While racing those 10 km, they must stop after 3 kilometers and after 7 kilometers to shoot at a target. If they miss, they must cover a 150m handicap. This takes 15-20 seconds to do, so missing the target is generally not favored by competitors.
10. This exhilarating sport involves players using a curved basket to launch a ball against the front wall with enough speed that their opponent cannot catch it or return it. What is the name of this sport?

Answer: Jai-alai

The ball used in jai-alai, although it weighs only 4.5 ounces, has been clocked in play at more than 185 miles per hour, enough to shatter bulletproof glass. Well, I hope you enjoyed this quiz. Please rate it if you get a chance, and send me a note if you think it was good(or bad!, or find an error).

As for me, I am soon hoping for several new sports to be widely recognized, such as synchronized lawn-mowing and underwater basket-weaving. But until then, I think I'll stick to the lesser known sports of this world.
