2. Tennis is not a usually a game of timing, but in 2010 at Wimbledon, the first round game between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut broke records both for the sheer number of games and the length of the match. How many hours of playing time did this game take?

Answer: 11 hours and 5 minutes

This by itself is longer than the six hours and 31 minutes it took Vicki Nelson and Jean Harper to play out a record setting game in 1984.

Brian O'Driscoll, Paul O'Connell, and Tommy Bowe are all prominent Irish rugby players who were on the 2009 winning team.
4. Super Bowl XLII, the culmination of the 2007 season, featured the New York Giants against the New England Patriots. In the closing minute of the game, Eli Manning threw a touchdown pass to Plaxico Buress to edge the Giants ahead with just 35 seconds remaining. What was the final score of the game?

The National Football League is made up of 32 teams which is split into two conferences, the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each conference consists of 16 teams, split into four divisions of four teams each.

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the NFL playoffs, where the winners of each division plus two wildcard entries from each conference compete. The Super Bowl is contested between the champion of the AFC and the champion of the NFC. The New England Patriots were definite favourites heading into Super Bowl XLII with an undefeated season behind them.

The New York Giants were a wildcard entry, and became the first wildcard entry from the National Football Conference to win the Super Bowl.
5. The Tour de France is a cycling race in which the overall winner is decided by time. In 1989, which American rider started the final stage in second place overall, 50 seconds behind the leader, and went on to win by a margin of just eight seconds?

Answer: Greg LeMond

The 1989 Tour de France was unusual in that the final stage featured a time trial. LeMond managed to make up the 50-second deficit and more, winning the yellow jersey by one of the narrowest margins in cycling history with a total time of 87 hours, 38 minutes and 15 seconds.

This was his second win, after his 1986 victory when he became the first American to win the Tour de France. He retained his title in 1990, making it a hat-trick of wins. Laurent Fignon of France came in second, just eight seconds behind. Sean Kelly of Ireland won the points competition and Lance Armstrong of America went on to win the Tour de France for the first time in 1999.

This goal not only clinched the match for the USA, but it also made them winners of their group, allowing them to advance to the final 16. England were runners up of Group C and Slovenia came third. Had USA not beaten Algeria in that final match, they would have been in third place behind Slovenia and exited the championship. Team USA met Ghana in the next round, and were defeated with a final score of two goals to one.

Interestingly, Ghana had defeated the USA by the same margin in their final group game at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

He was almost successful, but the photo finish showed that Senna had won. Alain Prost went on to win the 1986 season.
