Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Florida Marlins were an expansion team in Major League Baseball in 1993, and just four years later became the first wild card team to win the World Series. Who was their manager for that triumph?

Answer: Jim Leyland

Leyland took over as Marlins manager in 1997, and in just his first season in charge took them all the way to the World Series. They defeated the Cleveland Indians in extra innings in game seven to settle one of the most thrilling Series ever. The Marlins (who changed their name to Miami Marlins in 2012) became the first ever wild card qualifier to win the series, and set a record for the fastest series win by an expansion team.
2. Which driver was the first to win seven Daytona 500 crowns?

Answer: Richard Petty

The Daytona 500 is the traditional curtain raiser to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Held at the Daytona International Raceway since 1959, it is the richest race on the NASCAR schedule. Petty won his first 500 in 1964 and his seventh and last in 1981.
3. Ice Hockey in sunny Florida? Yes indeed, and the state produced a Stanley Cup champion in 2004 when the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated which Canadian team to lift the famous trophy?

Answer: Calgary Flames

The Lightning joined the NHL in 1992, and struggled through their early years. They won their first division title in 2002-03, and, the following season, went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. The match-up with the Flames went all the way to game 7 at the St Pete Times Forum, with the Lightning winning 2-1, Ruslan Fedotenko getting both their goals.
4. Bobby Bowden won 304 games as head football coach at which university?

Answer: Florida State

Bowden was appointed head coach of the Florida State Seminoles in 1976 and quickly turned the program into a national contender. Between 1982 and his final year in 2009, he led them to 28 consecutive bowl games. The national title was won in both 1993 and 1999. At the end of the 2012 season, Bowden led all coaches in FBS history with 389 wins, including an earlier spell at West Virginia.
5. Florida is home to a number of PGA golf events, the most prestigious of which is The Players Championship, sometimes dubbed the "fifth major". Which course hosts this event each year?

Answer: Sawgrass

The Players Championship has taken place at TPC at Sawgrass since 1982. The course is famous for the par 3 17th hole, nicknamed the "Island Green". The list of winners at Sawgrass include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia.
6. Which NBA legend did the Orlando Magic select with the first pick of the 1992 NBA draft?

Answer: Shaquille O'Neal

The Magic joined the NBA in 1989, and, like most expansion teams, struggled through their first few seasons. Their fortunes changed when they acquired O'Neal from LSU in the 1992 draft. He was voted the league's Rookie of the Year as he transformed the team's fortunes, and the Magic would go all the way to the NBA finals in 1995, losing to the Houston Rockets. O'Neal left for the LA Lakers after the 1995-96 season, and the team's fortunes plummeted.
7. The Miami Masters is a leading tennis tournament on both the ATP and WTA tours. What surface is the event played on?

Answer: Hard

The Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne became the permanent home of this tournament in 1987. Among the most successful players at this event have been Andre Agassi, who won six times between 1990 and 2003, and his wife, Steffi Graf, who triumphed five times between 1987 and 1996.
8. Which boxer from Pensacola, Florida, won the WBA heavyweight title in 2003, becoming the first former middleweight to win a heavyweight title in over 100 years?

Answer: Roy Jones, Jr.

Jones was born in Pensacola in 1969. A silver-medallist in the light-heavyweight division at the 1988 Olympics, he won his first world title in the pro ranks in 1993, beating Bernard Hopkins to claim the IBF middlweight title. Ten years later, he defeated John Ruiz in Las Vegas to become heavweight champion of the world.
9. The Jacksonville Jaguars joined the NFL in 1995- who was the head coach for the first eight years of their existence?

Answer: Tom Coughlin

The Jaguars joined the NFL alongside the Carolina Panthers in 1995, and were placed in the AFC Central division. Coughlin wasted no time in turing the team into a contender, leading them to a play-off berth in just their second season, eventually losing to the New England Patriots in the AFC title game.

In 1989, they were again just one step away from the Superbowl, losing to the Tennessee Titans.
10. Which coach led the University of Florida to consecutive NCAA basketball national titles in 2006 and 2007?

Answer: Billy Donovan

Donovan was hired from Marshall in 1996, and led the Gators to their first national championship game in 2000, losing to Michigan State. In 2006, they won their first national crown, defeating UCLA 73-57 in the championship game. Twelve months later they retained their crown, beating Ohio State 84-75.
