Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These 'foxy' ladies form the Victorian netball team competing in the trans-Tasman competition, the ANZ Championship. Who are they?

Answer: Vixens

The Melbourne Vixens are an amalgamation of two teams from the previous Australian national netball competition, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy. The Melbourne Kestrels and Melbourne Phoenix unfortunately missed out on the sole Victorian licence for the new trans-Tasman competition. It was decided to amalgamate the two teams to ensure the future of top level netball in Victoria.
2. Considered the biggest competitive sport in Victoria, which sport contains teams such as the Tigers, Hawks, and the Bulldogs?

Answer: Football (AFL)

The Australian Football League (AFL) was originally the Victorian Football League (VFL). The competition was officially re-named in 1990 to reflect the growing participation of teams from outside Victoria. Apart from being the biggest sport in Victoria, AFL is considered the biggest sport in Australia.
In 2009, there were 10 Victorian-based teams (out of 16 in the competition). They were the Geelong Cats, Hawthorn Hawks, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne Kangaroos, Essendon Bombers, Melbourne Demons, St Kilda Saints, Richmond Tigers, Carlton Blues, and the Collingwood Magpies.
3. The first fully-professional rugby league team based in Victoria, and playing in the NRL competition, are the Melbourne ________.

Answer: Storm

As AFL is the most played sport in Victoria, it is very hard for other sports to get a 'look-in' at the competitive level. Melbourne Storm is the first, and only, club playing in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition, which consists of fifteen teams from Australia and one team from New Zealand.
Melbourne Storm were formed in 1998 and won their first premiership in 1999. Winning three minor premierships and making four grand final appearances (winning two of those grand finals) makes the Melbourne Storm one of the NRL's most successful clubs.
4. Being Australia's oldest basketball club and entering the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1984, what is the name of this Melbourne team?

Answer: Tigers

Established in 1931 and entering the National basketball League (NBL) in 1984, the Melbourne Tigers won their fourth championship in 2008, with previous wins in 1993, 1997 and 2006 to make them one of the most successful basketball clubs in Australia (along with the Adelaide 36ers and Perth Wildcats).

Another Melbourne team, the South Dragons, joined the NBL in the 2006/07 season, but had their last season in 2008/09, making the Melbourne Tigers Victoria's only representative team in the NBL competition in 2009/10.
5. Previously known as the Melbourne Redbacks, VIS Redbacks, and the Azuma Vikings, the Victorian Vikings play which sport?

Answer: Hockey

The Victorian Vikings were 'born' in 1991 and won their second Australian Hockey League (AHL) championship in 1998 (1996 was their first). Their home ground, the State Netball and Hockey Centre, is close to the Melbourne CBD.
6. Which team play women's hockey for Victoria?

Answer: Vipers

The Australian Hockey League (AHL) introduced a women's competition in 1993, spawning the birth of several state teams including the Victorian Vipers. Their first championship win was in 2003, but several players have gone on to play for the Australian hockey team, the Hockeyroos.
7. The Victorian cricket team, famous for names like Bill Lawry, Merv Hughes, and Shane Warne, share their name with which type of outlaw?

Answer: Bushrangers

The Melbourne Cricket Club was founded in 1838, and at that time was the largest sporting club in Australia. Victoria played their first interstate cricket game against Tasmania in 1951, and joined the Sheffield Shield competition for its inaugural season in 1892/93. Victoria has won more than 25 Sheffield Shield titles and also plays in the Ford Ranger Cup (one-day competition), and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash (Twenty20 cricket competition).
8. Which Victorian baseball team competes in the Claxton Shield?

Answer: Aces

The Victoria Aces were one of the founding teams of the Claxton Shield competition in 1934. They have played in the various incarnations of Australian baseball ever since.
They have won 16 Claxton Shield trophies and their home ground is the Melbourne Ballpark.
9. Which of the following teams are not a Victorian team in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) in Australia?

Answer: Logan Thunder

Logan Thunder are based in Queensland. Bendigo Spirit is the youngest Victorian team playing in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), joining the competition in the 2007/08 season. The Bulleen Melbourne Boomers are the longest surviving team in the WNBL, although they have never won a championship.

The Dandenong Rangers joined the WNBL in 1992 and won championships in 2004 and 2005.
10. Founded in 1996 and one of only two teams to win a Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) competition in Australia, what is the name of the Victorian team?

Answer: Spirit

Since the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) was introduced in 1996/97, the Victorian and New South Wales' teams were the first to win any championships. Previous to the WNCL, the Victorian team won 38 of the 66 championships played. Since the 1972/73 season, the 'Ruth Preddy Cup' was awarded to the winning team (until the introduction of the WNCL).
