Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chelsea Football Club was founded in 1905. The club's Stamford Bridge stadium was close to being sold to a railway company before the club's formation, but whose idea was it to keep hold of the ground?

Answer: Fred Parker

Gus and Joseph Mears bought Stamford Bridge Athletics Ground in 1896 but had to wait until 1904 to get the freehold. The original intention was to host football matches at the ground, but disputes over rent forced Fulham, the intended home club, to look elsewhere.

The Great Western Railway Company showed interest in buying the ground, who wanted to use it as a coal-dumping yard. Parker tried to persuade Gus Mears into not selling the ground, which he eventually agreed with.
2. The first player to score 100 goals for Chelsea was George Hilsdon. What was his nickname?

Answer: Gatling Gun

Hilsdon joined the club from West Ham United in 1906 and remained with the club until 1912. He led the team to the First Division for the first time in the 1906-07 season with 27 goals over the course of the year. Despite relegation in 1910, Hilsdon helped the club back into the top tier before returning to West Ham in 1912.

He got the nickname Gatling Gun because his shots "were simply unstoppable and which travel like shots from a gun".
3. Who managed Chelsea between 1907 and 1933?

Answer: David Calderhead

Calderhead's reign was not littered with trophies, but the team did reach its first FA Cup final in 1915, and spent most of his reign in the First Division. The team finished third in the league in the 1919-20 season, the highest a London club had finished at that point.

Lewis was only with Chelsea as temporary manager during the 1906-07 season. Knighton succeeded Calderhead in 1933 and remained manager until 1939. Gallacher never managed the club, but he did play for them between 1930 and 1934, scoring 72 goals in 132 league games.
4. In 1937, Chelsea became the first English club to plapy in a tournament with other European clubs, participating in a competition known as "Arts et Techniques dans la Vie moderne". Which club defeated Chelsea in the final?

Answer: Bologna

As one may suspect with the name of the tournament, the competition took place in Paris. Eight teams took part in the event, including a number of French sides including FC Sochaux and Marseille. Bologna, who had won the four previous Italian championships, comfortably defeated Chelsea 4-1 in the final of the tournament.
5. The club won its first league title in 1955 and, as a result, were invited to compete in the inaugural European Cup (season 1955-56). Which club did Chelsea draw in the first round?

Answer: Djurgardens IF

As the defending champions of England, it was expected that Chelsea would compete with other European champions. However, the Football League and the FA denied Chelsea this opportunity, convincing them to withdraw from the competition. Before this occurred, the Blues had been drawn to face the Swedish champions in the first round. Eventually, Gwardia Warszawa took Chelsea's place, losing 4-1 to Djurgardens on aggregate.
6. Which of these events in Chelsea's history occurred first?

Answer: Peter Osgood's debut

Peter Osgood made his debut for the Blues in December 1964, scoring both goals in a League Cup victory against Workington AFC. Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the Fairs Cup in the 1965-66 season, but were eventually eliminated by Barcelona.

The Blues made their first FA Cup final appearance in 1915. Their second was in 1967, facing Tottenham Hotspur in what was known as the Cockney Cup Final (it was the first time that two London clubs had met in the final). Chelsea's loss in the '67 final set in motion a change of events that led to Docherty's dismissal early in the 1967-68 campaign.
7. Under the management of Dave Sexton, Chelsea made it to the 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup final, to face Real Madrid. After a draw, Chelsea won the replay 2-1. Which of these players scored in the final?

Answer: John Dempsey

Centre half Dempsey was not a common name on the scoresheet, but he delivered in the replay, scoring the opening goal in the 33rd minute. Peter Osgood added a second just six minutes later to give the Blues a nice cushion. While Real's Sebastian Fleitas scored a second half goal to give the Spanish side hope, Chelsea held on to win the club's first European honour.
8. In the 1980s, Chelsea's future at Stamford Bridge was in doubt amid huge financial difficulties. Plans to develop Stamford Bridge without Chelsea involved looked set to take place, but which event led to this not happening?

Answer: 1986 UK local elections

Chelsea Football Club and Stamford Bridge became separated during financial restructuring of the club in the 1970s. Bates bought the club in 1982, but did not buy SB Properties, which now owned the freehold of Stamford Bridge. Marler tried to move the club out of Stamford Bridge, which began a huge war of attrition between Marler and Bates.

Marler's redevelopment plans were accepted by Hammersmith and Fulham Council, but the Labour Party gained control of it in May 1986 which led to a reversal of the decision. By December 1987, Bates' own plans to develop the stadium were accepted.
9. Following the Heysel Stadium disaster in May 1985, English clubs from European competition for five years, leading to the formation of the Full Members' Cup, which Chelsea won in 1986. Which team did they beat in the final?

Answer: Manchester City

Chelsea defeated Manchester City 5-4 in the final, with David Speedie scoring a hat-trick and Colin Lee also scoring a brace. Leeds United were in City's group, but failed to advance. West Brom were Chelsea's semi-final opponent, while Oxford United faced Chelsea in the two-legged final of the tournament's southern section. Chelsea won 4-2 on aggregate to progress to the final, where they met the northern section winners, Manchester City.

The Heysel Stadium disaster occurred in the European Cup final, Liverpool v Juventus. A flimsy wall between the two sets of fans collapsed, killing 39 and injuring 600, after Liverpool fans surged toward Juventus fans; 14 Liverpool supporters were found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to prison for six years.
10. Who was Chelsea's first manager in the Premier League era?

Answer: Ian Porterfield

Porterfield became manager in the summer of 1991, replacing Campbell who had spent three and a half years in the job. Campbell became general manager upon Porterfield's appointment. After flirting with relegation in that inaugural Premier League season of 1992-93, Porterfield was sacked before the end of the season, in February 1993, and replaced by 1970 FA Cup winner Webb, who stayed with the club for the rest of the season. Hoddle took over on a permanent basis from Webb in the summer of 1993 and stayed until May 1996.
11. Ruud Gullit's arrival at Stamford Bridge in May 1996 led to an influx of established European stars joining the club. Which of these exciting foreign imports joined the Blues first?

Answer: Gianluca Vialli

Champions League winning forward Vialli joined the Blues on a free transfer from Juventus in May 1996. Di Matteo and Leboeuf joined a month late on the same day, 1st July 1996. Di Matteo had arrived from Lazio while Lebeouf joined Chelsea after playing for French club Strasbourg. Zola didn't arrive at the club until November 1996.
12. The 2004-05 season was one of the greatest in the club's history, winning the club's second league title with a record 95 points. During that year's Premier League season, goalkeeper Petr Cech went a league record 1,025 minutes without conceding a single goal. Whose goal started the run and whose goal ended it?

Answer: Thierry Henry and Leon McKenzie

On 12th December 2004, Chelsea drew 2-2 at Highbury against defending champions Arsenal, with Henry netting both goals for the Gunners. Chelsea then kept an incredible ten consecutive clean sheets over the next three months, shutting out Norwich City, Aston Villa, Portsmouth twice, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Everton.

The run finally ended on 5th March 2005, with McKenzie scoring for Norwich in a 3-1 loss to the Blues.
13. Chelsea's dominance under Jose Mourinho continued in the 2005-06 season, with the Blues winning another league championship. Chelsea only failed to beat one team at Stamford Bridge in the league; which team was it?

Answer: Charlton Athletic

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Charlton in January 2006, with Eidur Gudjohnsen scoring for the Blues and Marcus Bent netting for the visitors. Chelsea had already won 2-0 away at Charlton earlier in the season, meaning that they defeated every team in the league at least once.

Newcastle and Middlesbrough both lost at Stamford Bridge, but both sides registered victories over Mourinho's side at home. Chelsea's home record of 18 wins and just a single draw matched that of Newcastle in the 1906-07 season.
14. Chelsea made it to the Champions League final in 2008. They lost the final to Manchester United. Who scored for Chelsea in each of the three knockout rounds before the final?

Answer: Frank Lampard

Lampard scored the second goal of the second leg against Olympiakos in the last 16, sealing a 3-0 victory on the night and also a 3-0 victory on aggregate. Ballack and Kalou also netted that night. In the quarter-final against Fenerbahce, Chelsea won 3-2 on aggregate, with Ballack and Lampard scoring the goals in a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge to seal a semi-final spot. A Deivid own goal was Chelsea's only goal in the first leg.

In the semi-final against Liverpool, a John Arne Riise own goal gave Chelsea a 1-1 draw in the first leg with a Drogba brace and a Lampard goal sealing a 3-2 extra time win for the Blues. Lampard also scored in the final, equalising after Cristiano Ronaldo's opener. He also netted in the penalty shootout that Chelsea would narrowly lose.
15. Chelsea won their first post-Mourinho league title in 2010, edging out Manchester United in a thrilling title race. Which of these did the team also achieve during the 2009-10 Premier League season?

Answer: 100 league goals

Chelsea had 95 league goals heading into the final day of the season, a home game against Wigan Athletic. Incredibly, the Blues won 8-0, the equal-biggest win of the season, and ended the campaign with 103 league goals.

Chelsea's 32 goals conceded was impressive, but only enough for the second best record in the division. Manchester United bested this with just 28 conceded. United also had the most away wins with 11, one ahead of Chelsea's ten. Chelsea scored in all but one game, with Birmingham City holding the Blues to a 0-0 draw on Boxing Day 2009.
16. The greatest night in the club's history occurred on 19th May 2012, when Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich to win the Champions League for the first time. Which of these statements regarding the final is true?

Answer: Every missed penalty in the shootout was saved

Three of the ten penalties taken in the 2012 final failed to hit the net. Juan Mata missed Chelsea's first spot kick, with Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer comfortably saving a weak effort. In Ivica Olic's last game for Bayern, his penalty was saved after Petr Cech jumped to his left. With the penalty-shootout score at 3-3, Bastian Schweinsteiger's spot kick was saved by Cech on to the post, with Didier Drogba sealing the win with the next kick.

While Bayern were the first side in the Champions League era (post 1992) to have home advantage, the last team team to have this before the Bavarians was Roma in 1984 (European Cup era, pre-1992). Lampard and Ashley Cole scored in the 2008 and 2012 shootouts, but Carlos Mozer was the first to do so, scoring in losing efforts in the 1988 final with Benfica and 1991 with Marseille. Chelsea's Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa formed part of Porto's 2004 Champions League winning squad.
17. Which of these players had the shortest tenure at Chelsea?

Answer: Ricardo Carvalho

Carvalho joined the Blues in the summer of 2004, fresh off helping Porto to the 2003-04 Champions League and taking Portugal to the final of the 2004 European Championships. He left to join up with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid in 2010, after six years at Stamford Bridge.

Essien signed for a club-record fee in August 2005, leaving permanently for AC Milan in January 2014. Courtois, who only became the club's first choice keeper in 2014, signed in 2011, spending his first three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid. He left in 2018 to join Real Madrid. Hazard spent seven years at the club, signing from Lille in 2012 before joining Courtois in the Spanish capital.
18. Jose Mourinho, who left the club in September 2007, rejoined the club six years later in June 2013. He lead Chelsea to its fifth league title in 2015. However, Mourinho's second stint at Stamford Bridge unravelled quickly and he left again in December 2015. Which of these events that preceded his sacking occurred first?

Answer: Mohamed Salah joins Roma

The 2015-16 season is understandably remembered as a total disaster by the club's fans, particularly those not old enough to remember the dark days of the 1980s. August 2015 could very well be the worst month of Mourinho's career. On 6 August, future Premier League golden boot winner Mo Salah was loaned to Roma for the 2015-16 season. Two days later, Chelsea's title defence began with a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City, a game that featured a noticeable bust up between Mourinho and the club's medical staff. Caneiro, the team doctor, eventually won a £5 million settlement for Mourinho's behaviour.

The following week, Chelsea were hammered 3-0 away to Manchester City, a game that saw club captain John Terry substituted at half time. He had played every minute of the title-winning campaign. With the Chelsea defence looking weak, a breakthrough occurred when Everton defender John Stones requested a transfer, only for Everton to refuse and sell him to Man City a year later.
19. Under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Chelsea won a league title and an FA Cup in 2017 and 2018 respectively. After the FA Cup victory, what percentage of Chelsea's trophies* had been won during the 16 years from the Roman Abramovich's 2003 takeover? *(Charity/Community shields/Super Cups count but lower division titles do not)

Answer: 57%

As a result of the 2018 FA Cup win, Chelsea had won 30 major trophies in their history. 17 of these had been won since 2003.

Chelsea have six league titles, winning in 1955 and, since the takeover, in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2015 and 2017. Chelsea have won eight FA Cups, five since the takeover. They won it in 1970, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2018. The team also won five League cups, three since 2003. These came in 1965, 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2015. In the community shield, two of their four titles arrived since Abramovich took over, with the Blues winning the competition in 1955, 2000, 2005 and 2009. The team also won Full Members' Cup titles in 1986 and 1990.

The club won the Champions League in 2012 and the Europa League in 2013. Before this, the club also won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1971 and 1998, winning the UEFA Super Cup in 1998 also.
20. In 2019, Frank Lampard became the manager of Chelsea. Before him, how many previous Chelsea managers had led the club to a major trophy?

Answer: 14

Ted Drake (1952-61) was the first to achieve this, leading the club to the 1955 league championship and the Charity Shield. Tommy Docherty (1962-67) guided the club to the 1965 League Cup while Dave Sexton (1967-74) oversaw the club's 1970 FA Cup win and the following season's 1971 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup victory. John Hollins (1985-88) and Bobby Campbell won Full Members' Cup titles at Stamford Bridge while Ruud Gullit (1996-98) won the 1997 FA Cup. Gianluca Vialli's two year stint at the Bridge (1998-2000) saw the team win five major honours, including the FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Jose Mourinho (2004-07, 2013-15) won three league titles, three League Cups, an FA Cup and the Community Shield. As interim manager, Guus Hiddink won the 2009 FA Cup. Carlo Ancelotti guided the club to a league title, FA Cup and a Community Shield between 2009 and 2011 while Roberto Di Matteo led Chelsea's historic European Cup victory. Interim manager Rafa Benitez won the 2013 Europa League. Antonio Conte (2016-18) won the league and the FA Cup in successive seasons. Lampard's predecessor Maurizio Sarri was the 14th manager to bring silverware to the Bridge when he won the 2019 Europa League.
