Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It all started in spring training. The Rangers handed the 2nd baseman position to rookie Bump Wills (son of major leaguer Maury Wills) even before camp opened, and the player he replaced responded by punching out manager Frank Lucchesi midway through camp. Who was the player?

Answer: Lenny Randle

Randle had originally come up to the big leagues with the franchise when they were still in Washington, and apparently felt he didn't deserve to lose his job to a hotshot prospect. He was suspended, then promptly traded to the Mets.
2. In the midst of a so-so start, the Rangers had a few highlights. Which player was the first player in team history to hit 3 home runs in one game on May 15th?

Answer: Willie Horton

Until the stadium was altered in the 80s, the prevailing south wind made the ballpark one of the hardest in all of baseball to hit home runs in.
3. When Frank Lucchesi was fired on June 22nd, it led to the infamous 4 managers in a week mess. The Rangers hired Eddie Stanky as their new manager. He managed 1 game, which they won, then quit the next morning. Connie Ryan managed 6 games as an interim manager, then Billy Hunter came in for the rest of the year. What team did Texas beat for Stanky's only win as manager?

Answer: Twins

Stanky flew into Minnesota and won the game that night 10-8. He called management the next morning on the way to the airport to say he was quitting. The next choice of Hunter did work out well, as they went 60-33 during the rest of the season.
4. The Rangers turned their 1st triple play in team history on August 8th. Which opposing player hit into the 5-4-3 triple play.

Answer: Manny Sanguillen

To say that Sanguillen was not the fastest player in baseball was an understatement.
5. On August 27th, 2 Ranger batters hit inside the park home runs. Which of the following facts is false?

Answer: It was at Fenway Park

The site was Yankee Stadium. The 1st hit was a shot to the gap that split the outfielders, and on the other one, the right fielder ran into the wall trying to make a play and was too dazed to get the ball.
6. Which pitcher threw a no-hitter on September 22nd against the Angels?

Answer: Bert Blyleven

As it turned out, it was the last start for Blyleven as a Ranger. He was traded in the offseason to Pittsburgh.
7. Which pitcher never got double digit saves in any other season, but picked up 15 saves in 1977?

Answer: Adrian Devine

Devine came to Texas as part of the Jeff Burroughs trade to Atlanta, and his 1 big year was about all the Rangers got out of their end of the trade. Ironically, at the end of the season they traded Devine back to Atlanta.
8. Who hit 18 home runs for the Rangers while in the leadoff role for much of the 1977 season, and siubsequently became a major league manager?

Answer: Mike Hargrove

Although he was a slow 1st baseman, Hargrove led the club in batting average and on base percentage in addition to being 2nd in home runs.
9. What player better known for defense had his career high in batting average in 1977?

Answer: Jim Sundberg

Sundberg was a great defensive player, winning 6 gold gloves while at Texas, but was an average singles hitter for the most part offensively. He hit .291 in 1977, but never hit above .278 in any other season.
10. How many games did Texas win in 1977?

Answer: 94

The 94 win total was the 2nd highest number of single season wins in franchise history during the 20th century, including the time in Washington. Ironically, they still finished 8 games behind Kansas City.
