Following the 1971 season, Washington Senators (formed in 1961) owner Bob Short moved the team from Washington D.C. to Texas. During the final Washington Senators game, fans stormed the field in protest, resulting in the Senators forfeiting the game.

Hall of Famer Ted Williams was the first manager in Texas Rangers History. Following a 54 - 100 season, Williams resigned and was replaced by Whitey Herzog, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
