1. In the early 1960s, Henry Ford II decided Ford needed to get back into racing. What manufacturer was the target Ford wanted to beat on the international scene?

Answer: Ferrari

Ford had tried to buy Ferrari but when the deal fell through the goal shifted to just flat out beat Ferrari at a game they had been consistently winning. Ford representatives along with Carroll Shelby went to the 1963 Le Mans and watched Ferrari take the top 6 places.

2. The original Ford GT Mark I had a variety of engines. Which engine was not found in a Mark I?

Answer: 351 Cleveland

The 351 Windsor was installed in 1968. The 289 was the most popular of the Mark I blocks, and was designed to develop between 380 and 400 horsepower for 24 hours. It also was the engine that powered a GT-40 to two consecutive wins. More info on that in questions 5 and 10.

3. What did the 40 in GT-40 mean?

Answer: It was 40 inches high

A low, sleek 40 inches high. One model had to be fitted with a bubble in the roof to accommodate the helmet of a taller driver.

Holman and Moody are big Ford racers in NASCAR, drag and road racing. They ran the GT-40 as a privateer entry at Le Mans. Colin Chapman was head of Lotus. A Lotus powered by a Ford with Jim Clark as the driver was the first rear engine car to win the Indy 500. SVT is the division of Ford that builds the Cobra Mustang, Lightning F-150 and SVT Focus.

5. Some Mark I's were later re-named what?

Answer: Mirage

John Wyer took a couple Mark I's, painted them in Gulf colors, called them Mirages and won Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. The Europeans were crushed knowing they were beaten by cars designed four years earlier.
Three J-Car's were built but never raced, they were test mules for the Mark IV.

6. Where was the first victory for the GT-40?

Answer: Daytona

The February 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000km with drivers Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby. Ken Miles was later killed test driving a Mark IV.

Jo Schlesser got airborne on the Mulsanne Straight and flipped the car.

Although all of these great drivers raced the GT-40 at one time or another, it was McLaren and Amon who led the 1-2-3 finish for the GT-40's in 1966.

9. What racing tradition was instituted by the 1967 Le Mans winning team?

Answer: Spraying champagne

Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, who drove a 427 Mark IV, are generally recognized as the first winners to get carried away with their bottle of champagne. The Victory Lap came about from the extra laps drivers would run at races in the early part of the 1900's, wanting to make sure they had completed the distance in case somebody hadn't counted correctly.

10. How many times did the Ford GT win the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

Answer: 4

Four consecutive years, 1966-67-68-69! After the 1967 race the International racing rules were changed, outlawing the big blocks. Ford withdrew from active racing after that. But the GT-40 wasn't done. The GT-40 Mirages (see Q5) were raced with the 289 engines and won again in 1968.

In 1969 Ferrari and Porsche brought out the V-12 engines and entered a total of 20 cars at Le Mans trying to beat the Americans. The same five year old Mark I Mirage that had won in 1968 won again. The Ford GT-40 had proven beyond a shadow of doubt that it was the best racing car in the world.
