Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. America and Leon were the two finalists, after they both had a great tournament. In whose stadium was the first leg of the final played?

Answer: Leon

The first leg of the Apertura 2013 final was played in the Nou Camp Stadium, also known as Leon Stadium, located in Leon, Guanajuato. Leon was relegated to the second division in 2002 and didn't manage to return to the first division until the 2012-13 season. The team quickly showed it was ready for the first division.
2. Who was the referee of the first leg of the Mexican Apertura 2013 final?

Answer: Cesar Ramos

Cesar Arturo Ramos was appointed to referee the first leg of the final. A tournament before, Miguel Herrera, America's coach, said he thought Ramos deserved to referee the final, as he was "the best referee at the time". However, Herrera strongly criticized his work in the Leon-America game.
3. Which of the following players was NOT shown a yellow card at any point of the game?

Answer: Luis Gabriel Rey

All of these players belong to America, and were the only three players to receive a card during the game. Leon did not receive a single card. The game was constantly getting heated up, especially because of players like Sambueza, who is known for playing somewhat roughly.
4. The first goal of the match was scored only 10 minutes after it started. Which of these players, who played for Club Pachuca before playing for Leon, scored the goal? (Hint: he shares his name with a singer in the band "Big Time Rush")

Answer: Carlos Peņa

Carlos "El Gullit" Peņa, perhaps the best player of the game, started playing for Leon in 2011, after being drafted from Pachuca. The player got an ovation from the fans when he was substituted in the 87th minute by Fernando Navarro.
5. Usually, the finals in Mexico have two legs: one is played on Thursday and the other one on Sunday. Why was the first leg played in Leon's stadium?

Answer: America ended the season with a better position in the standings

As per Mexican soccer rules, the team that ends with better standings has the right to play the second leg (considered the actual final) in its stadium. In this case, America ended as the leader of the competition, which means the second leg had to be played in the Azteca Stadium, home of America.
6. The goalkeepers were, in my opinion, the best players of the game. They both made impressive saves in plays that would have otherwise resulted in many goals. Who were the two goalkeepers?

Answer: William Yarbrough and Moises Muņoz

William Yarbrough, who is of American origin but was born in Mexico, plays for Leon, and Moises Muņoz plays for America. They both had their moments and made great saves.
7. Which Argentine player, who has played for teams such as Boca Juniors and Wigan Athletic, scored Leon's second goal?

Answer: Mauro Boselli

Boselli, who has played in Argentinian, Italian, Spanish and English teams debuted with Leon in 2013. He ended up in second place of the top-scorers list of the Apertura 2013, being beaten by Pablo Velazquez by only one goal.
8. The match had a total of 12 corner kicks. Which FIFA law makes emphasis on the corner kick?

Answer: Law 17

There is a total of 17 "laws of the game". FIFA indicates in law 17 that when the ball crosses the goal line, and it was last touched by a player of the opposing team (usually defenders or the goalkeeper), then a corner kick is awarded. Law 1 talks about the field, Law 10 is about the method of scoring, and Law 14 refers to the penalty kick.
9. What was special about the first leg of the Mexican Apertura 2013 final?

Answer: It was the first final not to be broadcast on free TV channels

As the broadcasting rights of Leon didn't belong to either Televisa or TV Azteca (the two free TV channels in Mexico), the final made history as it was the first to be broadcasted on pay TV, on the Fox Sports channel.
It was also available to watch online.
10. Which of these millionaires was in the stadium, as he part-owned Club Leon at that time?

Answer: Carlos Slim

Carlos Slim is one of the richest men in the world. He owns the formerly state-owned telephone company, the leading cellphone company of Mexico, among many other enterprises. He decided to get into soccer business in 2012, when he bought 30% of Grupo Pachuca (owners of Pachuca and Leon), in order to compete with Emilio Azcarraga and Ricardo Salinas, owners of Televisa and TV Azteca.

The final has been referred to as the "battle of millionaires", as Televisa owns America, so Slim and Azcarraga were going to be, technically, directly competing. A Mexican fake news website even joked with the fact that they had supposedly made a bet in which should America lose, Azcarraga would have to surrender one of his television channels, and if Leon lost, Slim would have to give all of the "Sears" stores to Azcarraga.
