Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Yankees first baseman that had a headache and decided to take the day off, only to find that position filled by Lou Gehrig for the next 14 years?

Answer: Wally Pipp

Pipp was a solid player in his own right having twice driven in over 100 runs in a season and batting over .300 in three separate seasons, all coming out of the "Dead Ball" era. He went on to play for the Reds for three more years after the "Iron Horse" took over for him at first for the Yanks.
2. For whom was Steve Carlton traded in 1972, in a deal widely regarded as the worst in Cardinals history?

Answer: Rick Wise

Carlton went down as one of the best left handed pitcher ever, winning 329 games and striking out over 4000 batters. He was a first-ballot Hall of Famer. As for Wise, he pitched decently in his two seasons in St. Louis. But then, he bounced from Boston, to Cleveland, to San Diego. This trade still lingers in the minds of many Cardinals fans.
3. Who did Nolan Ryan strike out for his 5000th career strikeout?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

It was August 22, 1989. Henderson had a stellar career in his own right. Their paths would indirectly cross two years later on the night Henderson surpassed Lou Brock on the all-time stolen base list when Ryan pitched the seventh no-hitter of his career. Ryan did also have a history with Robin Ventura as evidenced by their on-field fight in 1993.

After retiring, Ryan purchased ownership interests in two minor league teams in his home state of Texas.
4. Who surrendered Mark McGwire's then-record breaking 70th home run in 1998?

Answer: Carl Pavano

Trachsel gave up McGwire's number 62 to break Roger Maris' record of 61. The home run ball was purchased by comic artist Todd McFarlane, of "Spawn" fame, who also owns several other milestone baseballs. Pavano went on to win a World Series ring with the Marlins in 2003.
5. When Don Larsen pitched the first perfect game in World Series history in game five of the 1956 series, who was the opposing pitcher?

Answer: Sal Maglie

Maglie pitched a stellar game in his own right, giving up just two runs on five hits. Unfortunately he ran into what is widely regarded as the best postseason pitching performance in the history of the game. Larsen had such control that only one hitter even went to a count of three balls (Pee Wee Reese).
6. Who was on the mound and gave up Bobby Thomson's legendary "Shot Heard 'Round the World" in 1951?

Answer: Ralph Branca

Branca actually came in to relieve Newcombe, who had taken the Dodgers into the 9th inning with a 4-1 lead. Maglie was the starter for the Giants. Willie Mays was on deck for Thomson but never came to bat. Mays also won Rookie of the Year award in 1951.
7. Who was the Red Sox shortstop who held the ball and looked to first as the Cardinals' Enos Slaughter made his "Mad Dash" in game 7 of the 1946 World Series to beat the Boston Red Sox?

Answer: Johnny Pesky

It was a double to left-center by Harry Walker. Slaughter ran through the stop sign from third base coach Mike Gonzalez as Pesky caught the throw in from the outfield. Pesky hesitated and threw up the line, making it impossible for catcher Roy Partee to apply the tag and Slaughter scored. Incidentally, the right field foul pole in Fenway Park is named after Pesky (Pesky's Pole).
8. What future Hall of Famer allowed Kirk Gibson's dramatic walk-off home run in game 1 of the 1988 World Series?

Answer: Dennis Eckersley

Gibson could barely walk and shocked the world with his walk-off blast. It would be his only plate appearance of the entire series, but it lead the Dodgers to a 4-1 series win over the Athletics. Eckersley went on to Cooperstown in 2004, finishing his career with 390 saves.

He won the World Series the next year, still with the A's, in the "Earthquake Series" over the San Francisco Giants.
9. On May 1, 1991, Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock's record for career stolen bases with his 939th steal. What other event in baseball that day overshadowed the feat?

Answer: Nolan Ryan pitched his seventh no-hitter

Henderson and Ryan had intersected two years before when Henderson, was the victim of Ryan's milestone 5000th strikeout. "El Presidente" (Dennis Martinez), pitched the 13th perfect game on July 28th of the same year. Whitten did hit four home runs in a game, just two years later in 1993. McGwire never hit eight home runs in a row.
10. Off what pitcher did Hank Aaron hit his 755th home run?

Answer: Dick Drago

It was July 20, 1976. Drago was on in relief for the Angels. Downing gave up home run number 716, allowing Aaron to pass Babe Ruth, two years earlier. Ryan was actually a starter for the Angels at the time, but it was Drago who gave up "Hammerin" Hank's final long ball.
