Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Owner Bill Veeck, known for his antics and promotionals, the Eddie Gaedel incident being one of them, pulled off a crazy promo on opening day in 1961 at Wrigley Field. What was it?

Answer: He hired all midgets as vendors

Veeck figured that his new vendors would not block the view of fans while they sold their items. However, he didn't figure on the weight of the trays versus the strength of the vendors, and by the end of the game, beer and soda had flooded every aisle. Announcer Jack Brickhouse said it was the strangest thing he had ever seen.
2. In the 2000 season, which Oakland Athletics relief pitcher blew a save without even throwing a pitch?

Answer: Jason Isringhausen

On August 5th, Isringhausen came into pitch against the New York Yankees with the bases loaded. Before delivering his first pitch, he balked in the winning run. In his next game against the Yankees, Jason blew another save with his first pitch, giving a home run away to Bernie Williams.
3. What happened on opening day, April 16, 1940, that had never happened before?

Answer: A no-hitter was thrown to begin the season

Feller, in his fifth season of baseball at the age of 21, no-hit the Chicago White Sox 1-0 at Comiskey Park. Bob went on to go 27-11 and win the Triple Crown in 1940, but the Indians finished in second place by one game behind the Detroit Tigers.
4. Milwaukee honored Brewers' pitcher Bob Wickman at a night game promotional. All fans in attendance received a free poster of Wickman. What was so weird about this?

Answer: He was traded the day before to another team

Wickman, who was only 2-2 with the Brewers at that point, was traded the day before to the Indians on July 29, 2000. The promotional brought only 29,000 fans to County Stadium.
5. Who set a record by hitting eight opening day home runs in their career?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Robinson played for 21 seasons mostly with the Reds and Orioles. Ironically, his last opening day home run came on April 8, 1975. Frank, as the first black manager in baseball history, was the player/manager for the Indians. The strange thing about this is his first at-bat in this new role led to his eighth. Mays of the Giants and Mathews of the Braves had hit seven in their career.
6. Chris Brown of the 1987 San Francisco Giants, begged manager Roger Craig to take him out of the game. What did he tell his manager?

Answer: That he slept on his eye wrong

Because of this excuse given, "The Chris Brown Sleeping Disorder" award was created, and given by managers to players with flimsy excuses to come out of a game. Brown was traded later in the season to the Padres.
7. In 1923, Red Sox rookie pitcher Clarence Blethen was injured during a game. What caused the injury?

Answer: He bit himself in the butt

The 30 year old rookie nicknamed "Climax", thought that he looked meaner without his false teeth, so he took them out during a game and put them in his back pocket. Forgetting they were there, he attempted to steal second base. The teeth clamped down on his backside, resulting in lacerations and many stitches.
8. On September 6, 2000, Scott Sheldon of the Rangers became the fourth player in history to play all positions in the same game. What was additionally strange about this event?

Answer: Except for catcher, he never had a ball come his way

Sheldon was a reserve player who played in 58 games in the season. He retired after only five seasons in 2001.
9. On April 11, 1907, why did the New York Giants have to forfeit their home game?

Answer: A snowball fight

The day before the Giants were to host the Phillies on opening day at the Polo Grounds, there was a huge blizzard. The field was cleared in time for the game, but the snowball fights went from the stands on to the field. Order could not be restored, and after home plate umpire Bill Klem was hit a few times, he forfeited the game to the Phillies.
10. On April 19, 2000, in a game against the Twins, Royals' runner Carlos Beltran was caught in a rundown between third and home. Who tagged Beltran out?

Answer: Twins left fielder

Beltran was tagged out by the Twins' left fielder Jacques Jones. For those who scored the game, the official book showed, 2 to 6 to 5 to 2 to 5 to 3 to 7.
