Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beat Feuz
Answer: Men's downhill skiing
Beat literally beat out his competition in downhill skiing. He won the gold for his country of Switzerland! He copied Didier Cuche with his celebration of kicking his ski in the air and catching it very smoothly, when he knew he flew perfectly through the snow at record speeds.
Watching his smile and his moment was amazing. He had won two medals, for downhill and Super-G, at the 2018 Olympics but finally grabbed his gold in 2022!
2. Petra Vlhova
Answer: Women's slalom skiing
Petra performs in both slalom and giant slalom as she races down the mountains on her skis. She not only won the gold medal but she also won the World Cup in 2021. This wasn't her first 'official' olympics, she raced in the Youth Olympic Games in 2012 in Austria. At the age of 26 she finally raced to the highest honor and the gold medal!
Petra was born in Slovakia in 1995 and has mentioned that both her and her brother were always the 'last ones to leave the slope' as she grew up, loving skiing. It finally paid off and she was able to take a bite out of her gold medal in Beijing.
3. Marte Roeiseland
Answer: Biathlon 7.5 km sprint
When Marte picks up her rifle and her skis, you know that a gold medal is coming soon. She picked up three gold medals for her country, Norway, in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics! The three different events included the 7.5 km sprint, the 10 km pursuit and the mixed relay. She did pick up two more medals, but they were bronze for the 12.5 km mass start and the 15 km individual. That's quite an impressive display of awards for this gal.
The biathlon is a sport that actually involves two sporting events in one. You not only have to race cross country but stop and hit targets with a rifle. If you miss the target, time will be added to your final time.
4. Iivo Niskanen
Answer: Men's cross country 15 km skiing
This young man from Finland has nothing to prove to us! He has picked up one gold medal for the last three olympics! He also picked up a bronze and a silver medal at the 2022 Olympics, along with his gold! He is making Finland proud of his accomplishments. Only four people from the entire country have won gold medals for three different events.
His first included the cross country men's team sprint in 2014. His second was for the 50 km cross country classical in 2018 and this one in Beijing for the 15 km.
5. Kaillie Humphries
Answer: Women's monobob bobsled
Kallie wasn't always competing for the United States, she originally is from Canada but contemplated moving to the United Kingdom and competing for them. She felt that she had to fight for her rights in Canada, so she opted to compete for the US. She was given the Lou March Award in 2014. The award is given to the top athlete in Canada.
Over the years she has changed her teams many times. She won two gold medals for two women team in both the 2010 and 2014 Olympics but attempted the monobob on her own for the 2022 Olympics. She succeeded and won the gold, Elana Meyers Taylor of the US won the silver and Canada won the bronze.
6. Johannes Ludwig
Answer: Men's single luge
Luge looks like the most terrifying sport to me. You are racing down an ice course lying on your back and barely able to keep your eyes on the track. Johannes has been participating in the sport since 1996. He won a gold medal in the Team Relay in 2018 at the Olympics, but picked up a solo gold medal at the 2022 Olympics and another gold for team also! It took a few years to finally get to the single gold medal.
He tried but didn't make the cut for both the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. I'm sure Germany is very proud of their medal winner!
7. Jakara Anthony
Answer: Women's moguls skiing
Jakara is not a newcomer to the Olympics, she represented Australia in 2018 but unfortunately came in fourth and no medal. She buckled down on those moguls earning her the top spot and the gold medal in 2022 Olympics as she soared down that mountain.
When I see the skiers heading down a hill over those moguls, my mind always go to their poor knees. It seems like you would need to have knee replacement every few years. Congratulations to this Queensland athlete for her accomplishment!
8. Nathan Chen
Answer: Men's singles figure skating
It's difficult to mention the 2022 Beijing Olympics and not mention Nathan. If you were lucky enough to view the gracefulness and outstanding spins and twirls, you know exactly what I mean when I say he was 'the best of the best'. The Quad King, as he's known as, was born in Salt Lake City to Zhidong Chen and Hetty Wang, both from China originally. Chen put on the skates for the first time at just the young age of 3.
The rest is history and gold medals! He picked up the gold for the single events and picked up a silver for the team event in 2022. So proud of you Nathan!
9. Eileen Gu
Answer: Women's halfpipe skiing
As you are skiing down a hill, you decide to do a few fun maneuvers and spins but Eileen took to the slopes and won TWO medals for China at the 2022 Olympics. She competed in the Big Air and Halfpipe, winning the gold medal for both of these events. She also picked up a third medal, the silver for the slope style.
The Halfpipe is actually a big U, as I would describe it. You are skiing back and forth doing twists and turns and getting as much 'air' as you can also. Eileen wasn't doing this on a snowboard, but on two skis! I'm impressed and I'm sure that China is also!
10. Max Parrot
Answer: Men's snowboarding
Maxence, known as Max comes from Quebec, Canada and picked up the gold medal for slope style snowboarding in Beijing. There's a few special stories about this young man, but many will recall the scoring at the event. He's supposed to grab his board during the competition but failed and grabbed his leg instead. Somehow the judges all failed to see the incident and he was awarded the gold medal to the shock of many viewers. Su Yiiming from China won the silver medal but I'm sure was a little heartbroken, knowing he could and should have won the gold.
