With two outs in the 10th, Bill Buckner, who was known for his stiff knees, let a ground ball roll through his legs. Ray Knight scored as the winning run, and the Mets went on to win the Series.

Pete Rose was banned from baseball on August 24, 1989 by Commissioner of Baseball Bart Giamatti for allegedly betting on 52 games during the 1987 season.

Although he had originally agreed to be part of the fix, by the time his third start came around, he had changed his mind. Only after his family was threatened by the gamblers did he agree to lose his third start. Although Shoeless Joe Jackson was also permanently banned, he was not a pitcher.

On July 24, 1983, George Brett hit a game winning two run homer. Yankees manager Billy Martin immediately popped out of the dugout to protest that Brett's bat had too much pine tar on it. After a lengthy conversation with the other umpires, home plate umpire Tim McClelland called Brett out for using too much pine tar. Brett stormed out of the dugout and had to be restrained so that he didn't punch McClelland.

The Curse of the Bambino is an alleged curse on the Red Sox for trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1918. The Curse of the Billy Goat is an alleged curse on the Cubs. In game 4 of the 1945 World Series between the Cubs and the Tigers, a Cubs fan named Billy Sianis was asked to leave the game because his goat that he had brought stunk, and fans were complaining.

When asked to leave, Billy said, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." Even though the Cubs were up two games to one in the World Series, they ended up losing and the Cubs have did not win a World Series from 1908 to 2016.
