Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1964, Major League baseball enacted a rule, stating that all base runners must face the base they are trying to encounter. Which Major League player caused the enactment of this rule?

Answer: Jimmy Piersall

On June 23, 1963, the Los Angeles Angel Piersall, hit his 100th career home run. Keeping up his antics of the past, he ran the bases backwards. Major League baseball did not like the mockery, and created the rule the following year.
2. In the historical incident where 3'7" Eddie Gaedel pinch-hit for the 1951 St. Louis Browns, Tiger pitcher Bob Cain walked Gaedel on four pitches, laughing so hard that he could not pitch. Who became a pinch-runner for Gaedel on this famous occasion?

Answer: Jim Delsing

The Browns' manager Zack Taylor had to produce numerous documents and telegrams, proving to home plate umpire Ed Hurley, that Gaedel was actually on the St. Louis roster. After being walked on four pitches, Delsing, an on-again off-again starter, ran for little Eddie.

This was Gaedel's first and only at-bat in the Major League. MLB later came out with height and weight regulations, so this incident would never repeat itself.
3. The Yankees and Red Sox had some well documented brawls throughout their rivalry years. In 1967, who was the batter who was hit by a pitch (HBP) that began the process for a major brawl in a game between these two teams?

Answer: Joe Foy

All these players were involved in this on June 21, 1967, and a major brawl it was. Immediately after Boston outfielder Tony Conigliaro belted a three run home run in the first inning, the Yankees' pitcher Thad Tillotson leveled third baseman Joe Foy with a pitch, but did not hit him.

The following pitch, Foy was hit in the head with a Tillotson pitch. The brawl did not start there. The following inning, Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg beaned Tillotson, the Yankee pitcher in retalliation. This was when the bell sounded and both benches emptied.

The Yankees' Joe Pepitione was injured in the action.
4. The Los Angeles Dodgers' Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs. In which year did this happen?

Answer: 1965

September 9, 1965, Koufax became a household name, as he won his second Cy Young Award. He also won the Triple Crown in the season, and was a close runner-up to the MVP behind Willie Mays of the Giants. From 1963-1966, Koufax displayed the greatest three seasons in four years of any other pitcher in baseball.

He won three Cy Young Awards, three Triple Crowns, was in the top two MVP voting, and set a season strikeout record by striking out 382 batters. He retired after the 1966 season due to elbow problems.

His final season also set a record, by having the best record in history in a pitcher's final season, going 27-9. Koufax was an easy Hall of Fame inductee in 1972.
5. Which of the following trios set the 20th century Major League record for hitting the most home runs in a season combined?

Answer: Yankees: Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Bill Skowron

A record was set in 1961 by these Yankee greats. Maris hit 61, Mantle 54, and Skowron hit 28, for an amazing total of 143 home runs. The record stood from 1927, with the Yankees' trio of Ruth, Gehrig, and Lazzeri, who hit a combined 125 home runs.
6. Which veteran pitcher had a well publicized credo: "I will hit two of your players for every one Dodger that you hit"?

Answer: Don Drysdale

This was the promise of the Dodger great who pitched from 1956-1969. Although Drysdale had great control as a pitcher, he hit 154 batters in his 14 seasons. He won the 1962 Cy Young Award, but was much overshadowed by teammate, Sandy Koufax, through most of his career.
7. In 1934 during a doubleheader, two pitching brothers shined. One pitched a two-hitter, and in the night cap the other pitched a no-hitter. Who were these brothers?

Answer: Dizzy and Daffy Dean

Only the Dean brothers pitched in 1934. As a member of the famous Cardinal 'Gas House Gang', Dizzy pitched a two-hitter against the Dodgers on September 21st. Daffy followed that up with a no-hitter. The Cardinals went on to the World Series, defeating the Tigers four games to three.
8. Who was the first pitcher in history to walk a batter without even throwing a pitch to him?

Answer: Dock Ellis

This really happened in 1973. Pittsburgh pitcher Dock Ellis who had been struggling, threw two balls to the Braves' Sonny Jackson. Bill Virdon, the Pirates' manager, yanked Ellis and replaced him with Ramon Hernandez. The Braves' manager Eddie Mathews playing chess, replaced Jackson for a pinch-hitter of Dick Dietz.

Hernandez threw two balls to Dietz, walking him, and the walk was charged to Ellis. Major League rules state that the pitcher who throws the first pitch to a batter is responsible for that outcome. Ellis was charged with walking Dietz, although he never threw a pitch to him.
9. On opening day in 1976, which Atlanta Brave set a record by committing four errors by the end of the third inning?

Answer: Darrell Evans

Evans, who started the game at third base, got his season off to a horrendous start. After 44 games with Atlanta, Darrell was shipped to the San Francisco Giants for the remainder of the season. Evans committed only nine errors in the entire season.
10. In the 1964 World Series, which player was picked-off second base by the humiliating 'hidden ball trick'?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The '64 World Series found the St. Louis Cardinals against the heavily favored New York Yankees. In a game with Mickey Mantle on second base, Cardinals' shorstop Dick Groat hid the ball in his glove and lured Mantle into a base lead-off. Groat tagged Mantle out, and the St. Louis fans went absolutely wild. Mantle was more than embarrassed. Mantle rebounded by hitting three home runs and batting .333 in the series, but lost the MVP and the series to Bob Gibson and the Cardinals.
