Answer: Atletico Madrid

Atletico were founded in 1903 as Athletic Club. They merged with Aviacion Zaragoza in 1939 to become Athletic Aviacion de Madrid, before becoming Atletico in 1947. They won nine La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey nine times in the 20th century; and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1962.

Answer: Real Betis

Real Betis were founded in the city of Seville in 1907. Their title success of 1935 was not a sign of things to come as they spent the next few decades yo-yoing between the first, second and third divisions. They eventually won more silverware in 1977 when they defeated Athletic Bilbao on penalties in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Answer: Sevilla

Sevilla FC were formed in 1890 and won their only La Liga title of the 20th century in 1946. Best known for their accomplishments in cup tournaments, they won the Copa del Rey in 1935, 1939 and 1948 during the 20th century. Their first European title came in 2006 when they won the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League).

In 2016 they became the first club to win three consecutive Europa League titles.

Athletic Bilbao were formed in 1898, and, by the end of the 2016/17 season, were one of only three clubs, along with Barcelona and Real Madrid, who had never been relegated from the top division of Spanish football. Their policy of signing only Basque players hasn't hindered their ability to win trophies - they won their eighth La Liga title in 1984 and their 23rd Copa del Rey that same year.

Real Madrid were formed in 1902 as Madrid FC - the Real (Royal) part of the name was added in 1920. They were by far the most successful club in Spain during the 20th century - they won La Liga on 27 occasions (Barcelona won 18 titles). In Europe, they won the European Champions Cup/Champions League every year between 1956 and 1960. Their sixth came 22 years later n 1998.

Villarreal CF were founded in 1923, and spent the first 75 years of their existence in the lower echelons of Spanish football. Their first season as a top-flight club, in 1998-99, saw immediate relegation, but they bounced straight back the following season and quickly established themselves as one of the strongest teams in La Liga.

They made their Champions League debut in 2005-06, reaching the semi-finals, where they lost to Arsenal. Their nickname alludes to their all-yellow strip.

Answer: Valencia

Valencia CF were formed in 1919 and were one of the top clubs in Spain in the 1940s, winning three La Liga titles. They had to wait until 1971 before their next championship, and had another barren spell before lifting two La Liga titles in 2002 and 2004. Real Madrid and Juventus were the teams who thwarted them in the final game of the Champions League in 2001 and 2001 respectively.

Based in the city of San Sebastian, Real Sociedad were formed in 1909. Unlike their local rivals Athletic Bilbao, they don't have an all-Basque policy on player recruitment. The club's golden era was the 1980s when they won successive La Liga crowns in 1981 and 82 and the 1987 Copa del Rey. In 1983 they reached the semi-finals of the European Champions Cup. losing to Hamburg.

Deportivo were founded in 1906 but didn't reach the top flight of Spanish football until 1941. They yo-yoed between the top two flights until they became regular contenders in the 1990s, winning the Championship in 2000. They won their first Copa del Rey in 1995.

The eternal rivals of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona were formed in 1899. Particularly since the Spanish Civil War, the club and its fans have been seen to represent the fight for Catalan autonomy. They defeated Juventus in 2015 to win their fifth European Champions Cup/League (1992, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015).
