Answer: Jim Kaat

Jim Kaat only won 283 in his great career. Kaat pitched 25 seasons, mostly with the Twins, and retired at the age of 44. He was 4th in the Cy Young voting in 1975 with the White Sox. Plank, playing most of his career with the Philadelphia Athletics, won 327 games. Wynn, who played with the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox, won 300 games. Finally, Tim Keefe, whose best season included winning 42 games for the New York Giants in 1886, won 342 for his career.

Answer: Bill Mazeroski

Although Bill Mazeroski never completed the UTP, he was a great second baseman who helped turn 161 double plays in 1966, while a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ron Hansen completed the UTP in 1968, while a member of the Washington Senators. Rafael Furcal turned the UTP in 2003, as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Bill Wambsganss managed the UTP in 1920, when he played for the Indians.

Al Kaline played 22 seasons for the Detroit Tigers. In those 22 years he posted 3,007 hits, but fell one homer shy of 400. Kaline was a 15 time All-Star and a 10 time Gold Glove winner. Carl Yastrzemski played 23 seasons, all for the Red Sox. He had 452 homers and 3,419 hits. Yaz won the American League MVP Award in 1967 and was an 18 time All-Star. Stan "The Man" was a great defensive player who could play the outfield, first base, and even pitched in one game for the Cardinals in 1952. Musial was a 3 time MVP in 1943, 1946, and 1948, and led the league in batting average 6 times.

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby hit safely in 32 games in 1922. Hornsby was a talented member of the Cardinals, Giants, Braves, Cubs, and Browns, over his 23 year career. Hornsby won the triple crown in 1922 and 1926, and was the MVP in 1925 and 1929. Willie Keeler did hit safely in 44 games as a member of the Baltimore Orioles in 1897. Keeler played 19 seasons in the big leagues and had a career .341 batting average.

The career hits leader, Pete Rose, also managed a 44 game hitting streak in 1978, as a member of Cincinnati's Big Red Machine. "Charlie Hustle" played 24 years professionally, primarily for the Reds, but he also played for Philadelphia and Montreal. Pete's 4,256 career hits, bested all other players in the history of baseball, entering the 2003 season.

He also won the 1963 Rookie of the Year Award, 2 Gold Gloves, 1 MVP Award, 1 World Series MVP Award, was a 17 time All-Star, led the league in batting average 3 times, hits 8 times and doubles 5 times. Sure sounds like some Hall of Fame credentials to me. Bill Dahlen played 21 years in the bigs, and had a 42 game hitting streak in 1894 as a member of the Cubs. Dahlen played for the Cubs, Superbas, Doves, and Giants, from 1891-1911.
5. Which player did not win a Cy Young award in the 1990s?

Answer: Frank Viola

Frank Viola did win a Cy Young, although it was in 1988 as a member of the Twins. Viola was a three time All-Star and was the 1987 World Series MVP. David Cone won the Cy Young in 1994 as a member of the Royals. Cone also was a 5 time All-Star. Pedro Martinez has won the Cy Young in both leagues.

In 1997, he won it for the Expos and in 1999 and 2000 as a member of the Red Sox. Pedro also won a pitchers triple crown in 1999. Pat Hentgen won the Cy Young in 1996 as a member of the Blue Jays. Hentgen was a three time All-Star as well.
6. What player has not hit at least 60 home runs in one season in their career?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Foxx never managed over 58 home runs in a season. Foxx played 20 seasons for the Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies. Foxx hit 534 homers and won 3 American League MVP Awards, and even won the triple crown in 1933. Babe "The Bambino" Ruth hit 60 homers for the 1927 Yankees, a team that many consider to be the greatest ever assembled. Ruth amassed 714 homers in his 22 season career. Ruth won the 1923 American League MVP and was a 2 time All-Star. Ruth also pitched effectively for the Red Sox and Yankees, winning 94 out of 163 games with a 2.28 ERA. Barry Bonds had an incredible career, and had 73 home runs in 2001 for the San Francisco Giants. Barry was still tearing up Major League pitching in 2003, and was pressing on to Hank Aarons career home run record. Sammy Sosa had put together an impressive run of homers including three seasons of 60 or more. Sosa has played for the Rangers and White Sox, but is best known as the power hitting outfielder for the Cubs. Sosa became a member of the 500 home run club in 2003.

Carlton Fisk was preceeded the others by one year, entering the Hall as a member of the White Sox in 2000. "Pudge" was an 11 time All-Star, won the 1972 American League Rookie of the Year Award, and was a one-time Gold Glove winner. Bill Mazeroski played 17 years for the Pirates.

His entry in the Hall of Fame in 2001 was overdue. He was a great second basemen who dazzled audiences with his great defense. He was a 7 time All-Star, 8 time Gold Glove winner and finished eighth in MVP voting in 1958. Kirby Puckett saw his career shortened due to glaucoma, but played 12 seasons for the Twins. Kirby won 6 Gold Gloves, was a 10 time All Star and even won the All-Star Game MVP in 1993. Dave Winfield played 22 seasons for the Padres, Yankees, Angels, Blue Jays, Twins, and Indians. Winfield entered the Hall as a member of the Padres. Winfield hit 465 homers, 3,110 hits, and had a career batting average of .283.

He also was a 12 time All- Star, won the Gold Glove 7 times, was in the top ten in MVP voting 7 times, and led the league in RBI's in 1979 with 118.

Answer: Ty Cobb

Ty Cobb stole 892 bases in 24 seasons, most of them with the Detroit Tigers. "The Georgia Peach", as Cobb was dubbed, won the triple crown in 1909 and was MVP in 1911. Cobb had a career batting average of .366, which ranked him as number one in the 20th century. Lou Brock had more stolen bases than RBI's (938 vs. 900) in his 19 year career. Brock started his career with the Cubs, but was best known as the speedy outfielder for the Cardinals. Brock was an All-Star 6 times, and finished in the top ten for MVP 5 times.

He led the league in stolen bases 8 times, including the 1974 season when he stole 118 bases. Billy Hamilton played 14 seasons for the Kansas City Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Beaneaters. He compiled 912 stolen bases, earning him the nickname "Sliding Billy". Billy led the league in stolen bases 5 times.

His best years were 1889 and 1891, when he stole 111 bases each year. Rickey Henderson, entering the 2003 season, was tops. In 2003, he was still adding to that record playing for the Dodgers.

Henderson's best years came as a member of the Oakland A's, when he had three seasons of over 100 stolen bases. Rickey also owned the all-time 'base on balls' record.

Believe it or not, Hank Aaron only managed to hit 624 doubles in 23 seasons. Aaron was at one point, the all-time leader in home runs, total bases, RBI's and extra base hits. Aaron was an All-Star 21 times, won 3 Gold Gloves, won the MVP Award in 1957, and was in the top ten 12 other times. Tris Speaker hit 792 doubles in his 22 years with the Red Sox, Indians, Senators, and Athletics. Speaker won the MVP in 1912, and his 792 doubles ranked number one when he retired. Musial hit 725 doubles including the 1953 season, that saw him hit 53 doubles. Cobb hit 724 doubles, including the 1911 season when he hit 47 doubles.

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays only played in 2,992 games which ranked him ninth all-time when he retired. Aaron played in 3,298 ranking him third upon his retirement. Cobb played in 3,035 ranking him fifth in the 20th century. Stan Musial played in 3,026 ranking him sixth when he retired. Who had played in the most games ever, entering the 2003 season?
