Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1970 Wimbledon Championships ended in triumph in both the men's and women's singles for players from which country?

Answer: Australia

John Newcombe defeated fellow Aussie Ken Rosewall in five sets in the men's final to clinch his second Wimbledon crown. Margaret Court won an epic women's final, defeating Billie Jean King 14-12, 11-9 (there were no tiebreakers in those days).
2. Which Australian woman won her first Wimbledon crown in 1971?

Answer: Evonne Goolagong

Goolagong defeated second seed Billie Jean King in the semi-finals, then dispatched top seed Margaret Court in straight sets in the final. The men's title was won by John Newcombe who defeated Stan Smith in a five-set marathon in the final.
3. In 1972, Stan Smith won his only Wimbledon title, defeating which east European player in the final?

Answer: Ilie Nastase

Smith was the top seed in the men's singles, and defeated second seed Nastase 7-5 in the fifth set to win the title. In the women's singles final, Billie Jean King won her 4th Wimbledon crown with a straight sets win over Evonne Goolagong.
4. The 1973 championships were notable for the boycott by 81 leading male players in protest at the suspension of which player?

Answer: Niki Pilic

Pilic was suspended for refusing to represent Yugoslavia in a Davis Cup tie. 13 of the 16 seeds were among those who refused to participate at Wimbledon in protest. The weakened tournament ended with Jan Kodes defeating Alex Metreveli in the final. The women's event wasn't affected by the boycott, with second seed Billie Jean King winning her 5th title with a straight sets final victory over Chris Evert.
5. What unique connection was there between the respective men's and women's champions in 1974?

Answer: They were engaged to be married to each other

Jimmy Connors defeated Ken Rosewall in straight sets to win his first Wimbledon crown, whilst Chris Evert was also a first-time champion, defeating Olga Morozova in the final. The so called 'Love-Match' between the pair didn't end in marriage, however.
6. The 1975 men's singles final ended in a shock defeat for Jimmy Connors at the hands of which player?

Answer: Arthur Ashe

Defending champion Connors was a hot favourite to win his second consecutive title, but Ashe prevailed in four sets to become the first African-American to win the title. In the women's event, Billie Jean King cut off defending champion Chris Evert in the semi-finals, before thrashing Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the final for the loss of just one game.
7. In 1976, Ilie Nastase made it to his second final, only to lose to which final debutant?

Answer: Bjorn Borg

Fourth seeded Borg stopped Nastase in straight sets to lift his first title. Chris Evert defeated Evonne Cawley in the women's final although, unlike the previous year when the Australian was thrashed in the final by Billie Jean King, Cawley pushed Evert all the way, going down 6-3, 4-6, and 8-6.
8. 1977 was the Silver Jubilee year of Queen Elizabeth II with the Queen looking on from the royal box. The women's final resulted in victory for which British player?

Answer: Virginia Wade

Wade and Barker both reached the semis, but while Wade beat defending champion Chris Evert in three sets, Barker just failed to make it an all-British final, losing to Dutchwoman Betty Stove. In the final, Wade recovered from the loss of the first set to lift the title 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In the men's singles, the Brits didn't fare quite as well, with only Marx Cox reaching the last 16. Bjorn Borg won an epic five-set final over Jimmy Connors.
9. 1978 saw the first women's singles title for which player?

Answer: Martina Navratilova

Second seeded Navratilova won a tight semi-final against Evonne Cawley, then recovered from losing the first set in the final to see off Chris Evert 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Bjorn Borg successfully defended his men's title, with Jimmy Connors again his final victim. Although unlike 1977, Borg won comfortably in straight sets.
10. The 1979 Wimbledon championships saw Bjorn Borg triumphant, beating which American in the final?

Answer: Roscoe Tanner

The men's final went right down to the wire, with Borg prevailing 6-4 in the fifth set. Martina Navratilova defeated Chris Evert in straight sets in the women's final.
