Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which European monarch who had died just days before the start of the Games, was honoured during the Opening Ceremony?

Answer: King George VI of England

King George VI passed away on February 6th in 1952. He was succeeded by his daughter who became Queen Elizabeth II.
The Games were held from the 14th to the 25th of February.
2. Almost every event of the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics were actually held in Oslo, with one exception. Which event was held at Norefjell?

Answer: Alpine skiing

The alpine skiing event comprised six disciplines in 1952. It was the first time that the giant slalom skiing featured at the Olympics. Austria topped the medal table for the skiing with a total of seven, including three gold.
3. At the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Dick Button of the USA won the gold medal in the men's figure skating, and also made which outstanding achievement?

Answer: First ever successful triple jump in international competition

Dick Button retained the title he had won at the previous Winter Games, held in St. Moritz.
As well as landing his triple loop in Oslo, he was the first man to successfully land a double axel, during his winning routine in St. Moritz. He also invented the 'Flying Camel' spin.
4. The largest single haul of gold medals for one athlete at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo was when a Norwegian man took three in the speed skating events. Who was he?

Answer: Hjalmar Andersen

Hjalmar Andersen worked as a truck driver in Norway, and won his three gold medals in the 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m races. He had previously been the first man ever to skate the 10,000m in under 17 minutes.
5. There was only one demonstration sport event at the 1952 Winter Olympic Games in Oslo. What was it?

Answer: Bandy

Bandy is also known as Russian hockey, and is broadly similar to soccer on ice. Two teams of 11 players each play two 45-minute halves on a rink the approximate size and shape of a soccer field. There is even an offside rule.
In 1952, only Sweden, Finland, and Norway entered teams for the bandy event. Although Sweden placed first with Norway second and Finland third, medals were not awarded due to it being a demonstration event.
6. What was the significant 'first' of the ice hockey competition at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo?

Answer: The majority of the games were played on an artificial ice rink

A new stadium, the Jordal Amfi, was specially built for the games. Twenty three of the matches were played there, on artificial ice.
The Canadian team who were actually the Edmonton Mercurys club team, won the gold medal and the United States took silver. The bronze medal playoff was won by Sweden.
7. Which two countries made their Winter Olympic debuts at the 1952 Games in Oslo?

Answer: New Zealand and Portugal

Sadly, no athletes from either country managed to win a medal. The Netherlands team won three silvers in 1952, giving their country its first-ever Winter Olympic medals.
The inclusion of a German team was controversial in the aftermath of World War II, but the Norwegian organising committee insisted and an invitation was issued. West Germany formed a team but the East Germans declined to join them.
8. At the Winter Olympic Games in Oslo in 1952, which event allowed women to enter for the very first time?

Answer: Cross country skiing

The women's event was held over a distance of 10 kilometres, and all three medals were won by athletes from Finland.
The men's event had three races, over 18 and 50 kilometres, and a relay of 4x10 kilometres. All the medals went to Scandinavian athletes.
9. At the Oslo Games, both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh events were won by the German team. Their victory led to a change in the rules for bobsleigh competitions in future Olympics. What was this change?

Answer: A weight limit was imposed on bobsleigh participants

The average weight of each member of the German bobsleigh teams was well over 100 kilos (they were around 260lbs each), and they weighed more than the 1952 Olympic heavyweight boxing champion.
Although the German victories stood, the fact that the German athletes weighed as much as they did had given them a major advantage over the other teams. A maximum weight limit was thus introduced to prevent this happening again.
10. Which 'first' occurred at the Closing Ceremony of the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics?

Answer: The passing of the Oslo flag to the next host city was instigated

The Oslo flag has since been passed on to each successive host nation during the Closing Ceremony of each Winter Games.
Doves are usually released during the latter stages of the Opening Ceremony. At one time, they were released as the Olympic Flame was lit, but since several were burned to death in 1988, they are now released later on at a safe distance from the flame.
