Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Germany's Miroslav Klose finished top of the goal scoring charts with 5 goals. Eight players finished the tournament with 3 goals apiece. Which of the following did NOT score three goals?

Answer: Nuno Maniche

Maniche scored 2 goals, Portugal's first in their 2-1 win against Mexico, and the only goal of the game against the Netherlands in the round of 16.
2. Frank Lampard finished the tournament with more shots than any other player, 24 in total, but of the 11 that were recorded as shots on goal, none made it to the back of the net. Which striker had the most number of shots on goal?

Answer: Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry scored 3 times in total from his 16 shots, of which 13 were on target.

Miroslav Klose and Cristinao Ronaldo both recorded 12 shots on goal, with Podolski hitting 10 shots on target.
3. One of the talking points about the World Cup 2006 was about discipline - or more accurately the lack thereof! On a more positive note, which team finished the tournament with the fewest yellow cards?

Answer: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia finished with 5 yellow cards, and no red cards. Spain finished with just 6 yellow cards and no reds, and both Japan and Paraguay had just 7 yellows cards each.

Of the 32 teams that started the tournament, only 12 teams left without receiving any red cards. FIFA's Fair Play trophy was jointly awarded to Spain and Brazil (only teams making it to the knock-out round qualify for this).
4. Serbia & Montenegro hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons when they lost 6-0 to Argentina. They subsequently ended up conceding more goals than any other teams at the tournament, lettting in 10. One team conceded 9 goals in total. Which team was it?

Answer: Costa Rica

Costa Rica lost 4-2 to Germany in a thrilling opener to the 2006 World Cup, and then lost 3-0 against Ecuador and 2-1 against Poland. Saudi Arabia, Japan and Ukraine conceded 7 goals each.
5. The fastest ever goal in World Cup history was scored by Hakan Sukur of Turkey, who scored after only 11 seconds against South Korea in 2002 in the Third Place Play-Off. In 2006, the tournament's fastest goal was scored in the 2nd minute. Who was the scorer?

Answer: Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan of Ghana scored in the 2nd minute against Czech Republic and the match ended 2-0 in favor of Ghana. Unfortunately for Gamarra of Paraguay, he scored in his own net, the only goal in Paraguay's 1-0 loss to England. This became the third fastest recorded own goal in World Cup finals history.
6. Germany topped the scoring charts with 13 goals in total. But over 7 games this left Germany with an average of 1.86 goals per game. Which team had the highest average number of goals per game?

Answer: Spain

Spain scored 9 goals in 4 games, an average of 2.25 goals per game. This still would not have been good enough to see Spain go through against eventual finalists France in the Round of Sixteen, when they lost 3-1.
7. FIFA's Technical Study Group selects a Man of the Match after each game. Which player finished the tournament with the most Man of the Match awards?

Answer: Andrea Pirlo

Not only did Pirlo collect the Man of the Match award three times, but two of these occasions were the final and semi-final. The other MoM award was against Ghana in Italy's first Group stage match.

Klose and Ze Roberto each claimed two Man of the Match awards. Golden Ball winner Zinedine Zidane received one Man of the Match award, in France's 1-0 win against Brazil in the Quarter Final.
8. Arsenal had more players represented than any other team in the World Cup. How many players from Arsenal were in Germany for World Cup 2006?

Answer: 16

Despite being considered a team full of French players, Thierry Henry was the only Arsenal player in France's squad.

Other Arsenal players at the World Cup 2006 were:

Campbell, Cole (A.), Walcott - England
Toure, Eboue - Ivory Coast
Senderos, Djourou - Switzerland
Fabregas, Reyes - Spain
Gilberto - Brazil
Rosicky - Czech Republic (he became an Arsenal player 3 weeks prior to the tournament)
Lehmann - Germany
van Persie - Holland
Ljungberg - Sweden
Adebayor - Togo
9. Ali Boumnijel of Tunisia was the oldest player appearing in World Cup 2006. How old was he at the time of the finals?

Answer: 40

Boumnijel was born in April 1966, making him 40 at the time of the finals. Whilst this is impressive, the oldest ever player in a World Cup tournament was still Roger Milla , who at the age of 42 years and 39 days played for Cameroon against Russia in USA 94.
10. With 27 saves, and only 2 goals conceded in 7 matches, Italy's winning goalkeeper was understandably recognised as the tournament's best goalie. But there was one keeper who did not let a single goal past him in 4 matches - what was his name?

Answer: Pascal Zuberbuehler

Zuberbuehler was a key reason why Switzerland did not concede a single goal in open play during the entire tournament, making 18 saves in the process. Switzerland became the first team ever to be knocked out of the tournament without conceding a single goal.

They lost on penalties to the Ukraine on the Round of 16 after a 0-0 draw aet. To rub salt in their wounds, Switzerland also failed to score any of their penalties in the shoot-out, another unenviable first.
