Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which teams won their League Championship Series', American League and National League respectively, in 2001 to earn World Series berths?

Answer: New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona handed the Braves their second straight NLCS loss, while the Yankees upset the record-setting Mariners in the ALCS. Seattle had won an AL record 116 games in the regular season.
2. Who was New York's Game 1 starting pitcher?

Answer: Mike Mussina

Mussina had a poor start, as he did not last four innings in the Yankees' 9-1 loss.
3. Who hit Arizona's only home run in Game 2?

Answer: Matt Williams

Third Baseman Willams' three-run shot in the seventh inning, helped seal the D-Backs' 4-0 win en route to a 2-0 series lead.
4. This was not the first time New York was down 2-0 in a playoff series in 2001?

Answer: True

The Yankees were down 2-0 in the AL Division Series against Oakland, but rallied for a 3-2 series win, spurred by shortstop Derek Jeter's phenomenal play to get Giambi out at home in game three.
5. Who hit Game 3's only home run?

Answer: Jorge Posada

Catcher Posada's second inning blast was one of only three runs in the game, a 2-1 victory for the Yankees. Roger Clemens out-dueled Brian Anderson in this low-scoring defensive battle.
6. Which Yankee homered off D-Backs closer Byung-Hyun Kim, in the bottom of the 9th in Game 4, to send the game to extra innings?

Answer: Tino Martinez

First Baseman Martinez's two-run shot gave Kim a blown save in his first career postseason appearance, and ruined a brilliant outing by starter Curt Schilling.
7. Who homered off Kim in the bottom of the 10th in Game 4, to give New York a 4-3 win?

Answer: Derek Jeter

To add insult to his blown save, Kim took the loss as well, as the Yankees tied the series at two.
8. Kim blew a save and took the loss in Game 5?

Answer: False

Kim blew another save by allowing a game-tying solo shot to Third Baseman Scott Brosius in the 9th, but Albie Lopez took the loss in the bottom of the 12th after giving up an RBI single to Second Baseman Alfonso Soriano.
9. Name the players who hit back-to-back homers for the Diamondbacks in the fifth inning of Game 5.

Answer: Steve Finley & Rod Barajas

The homers by Finley and Barajas gave Arizona a 2-0 lead, which lasted until the 9th inning.
10. How many runs did the Diamondbacks score in the third inning of Game 6?

Answer: 8

With the series back in Phoenix, the D-Backs scored eight runs in the third inning, to hand Yankees starter Andy Pettitte his second loss of the series.
11. In Game 6, how many earned runs was Jay Witasick charged with?

Answer: 8

Witasick's only appearance in the series was one he probably wishes he could forget. He entered the game with the Yankees down 4-0, and by the time he left, New York was in a 13-0 hole. 9 runs, 8 earned. Ouch.
12. The Diamondbacks set a record for hits in a World Series game in Game 6?

Answer: True

Arizona pounded out 22 hits off Yankees pitching in their 15-2 victory, breaking the record of 20, set in 1921 by the New York Giants, and tied in 1946 by the St. Louis Cardinals.
13. Which Arizona pitcher made his third start of the series in Game 7?

Answer: Curt Schilling

Schilling pitched 7 1/3 innings in Game 7, getting pulled by manager Bob Brenly after allowing a tiebreaking solo home run to Alfonso Soriano, that gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
14. Who singled off of Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the 9th inning, to give the Diamondbacks their first World Series championship?

Answer: Luis Gonzalez

Left Fielder Gonzalez, who finished third in the 2001 NL MVP voting, drove home Second Baseman Jay Bell with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 9th. Shortstop Womack and backup Outfielder Cummings were both involved in the game-tying play, in which Womack doubled home Cummings, a pinch-runner for Mark Grace.

This was Rivera's first blown save since the 1997 ALCS against Cleveland, and that is considering the Yankees won the World Series every year after that until 2001.
15. Which two Diamondback pitchers shared the World Series MVP award?

Answer: Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson

Schilling was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and finished with a 1.69 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched, while letting up only 12 hits and walking just two batters. Johnson got the W in Games 2, 6, and even Game 7 with a surprise relief appearance of 1.1 innings on zero days rest. Johnson recorded an unbelievable 1.04 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings, all while allowing only 9 hits and giving three batters free passes.
