The New York Yankees faced the New York Mets in the first Subway Series since the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956. The Yankees won their third straight series, and 26th overall, with a four games to one victory over their crosstown rivals. Derek Jeter was voted series MVP, batting .409 and hitting two home runs.

In a series that began later than any previous series, due to the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Diamondbacks prevailed 4-3 in a series where every game was won by the home team. The pitching duo of Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling struck out 45 batters between them, and were voted co-MVPs of the series.

In an all-Golden State series, the Angels rallied from a 2-3 deficit against the Giants to win their first World Series title in seven games. Troy Glaus batted .385 and hit three home runs on his way to MVP honors.

Answer: Josh Beckett

Series MVP Beckett gave up just two hits, and struck out nine batters, as the Marlins completed a 4-2 series win with a 2-0 victory in game six. The Yankees had led the series 2-1 after game three, only to slump to three straight losses.

The Boston Red Sox hadn't won a World Series crown since 1918, with the blame often being placed on the sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919. The Red Sox had come close many times to winning the series in the intervening years, none more so than in 1986, when Bill Buckner let a routine ground ball slip between his legs to give the New York Mets fresh hope. Finally, in 2004, the New England team ended the long wait of their fans by crushing the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0. Manny Ramirez won the MVP award, batting .412 with seven hits.

Amazingly, just 12 months after the Red Sox had ended their 86 year wait for a series win, the White Sox followed suit, lifting their first crown in 88 years. The Houston Astros, making their series debut, were their victims in a 4-0 sweep. Jermaine Dye batted .438, with seven hits, on his way to the MVP award.

This was the third time that the Cardinals and Tigers had met in a World Series, St. Louis having won in 1934, and Detroit in 1968. The Cardinals won the title for the 10th time in their history, in their first season at the new Busch Stadium.

The Rockies had swept both the Phillies and Diamondbacks in the first two rounds of postseason play, but an eight-day layoff before the series began seemed to cost them. Boston thrashed them 13-1 in game one, and never looked back. MVP Mike Lowell helped himself to six hits and four RBIs in a one-sided series.

Answer: Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays, who had dropped the word "Devil" from their name during the close-season, had never even had a winning record in their ten previous seasons as an MLB team. That was all to change in 2008, as they won the AL East by two games from the Red Sox, then eliminating the White Sox and Red Sox in post-season play.

The fairytale came to an end in the World Series, as the Phillies won their first title since 1980. Cole Hamels was MVP, as the team from the City of Brotherly Love won in five games.

The Yankees won their first title since 2000, and their 27th overall, with a 4-2 series win over the defending champion Phillies, in their first season at the new Yankee Stadium.. Matsui was only used as a pinch hitter in the three games played in Philadelphia, but still won the series MVP award, tying a series record with six RBIs in game six, and batting .615 overall in the series.
