Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1960 World Series was won in the bottom of the ninth inning of game seven. The home run was hit by Bill Mazeroski. Who dished up the pitch?

Answer: Ralph Terry

All the other former Yankees were all retired by the 1960 season. Terry had gone 10-8 in the season and given up 15 home runs. After losing game four 3-2 in the starting role, he came back in relief in game seven. The Yankees outscored the Pirates in the series 55-27. Bobby Richardson was the MVP of the series for his 11 hits and 12 RBIs for the Yankees.
2. The 1954 Cleveland Indians went 111-43 in the season, and were huge favorites to win the World Series. Which team skunked them four games to none?

Answer: New York Giants

None of the others existed in 1954. The Giants finished the season off with a 97-57 record, and were led by Willie Mays, Dusty Rhodes, and pitcher Johnny Antonelli. The Giants outscored the Indians in the series, 21-9. Bob Lemon, who had won 23 games in the season for Cleveland, lost two games.
3. The 1988 World Series pitted NL MVP and Dodger Kirk Gibson, against the AL MVP of Oakland, Jose Canseco. The Dodgers also had NL Cy Young winner Orel Hershiser. Which of these blunders happened in the series?

Answer: Canseco batted .053 with only one hit in the series

Gibson had only at-bat, and it was the famous walk-off home run to win game one of the series. Hershiser won games two and five, going 18 innings and giving up only two runs. Orel was the series MVP. Canseco, who won the MVP over Mike Greenwell and Kirby Puckett, didn't bring his lunch to the series. Jose went just 1-for-19, his only hit a home run.

The Dodgers won the series four games to one.
4. With two Hall of Fame pitching arms and four pitchers who won in double-figures in the season, the Los Angeles Dodgers were favored to win the 1966 World Series. But, because of a religious holiday, one of the pitchers refused to pitch on day one of the series, and took the blame for the series' loss to the Orioles. Who was the pitcher?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

McNally and Bunker were Oriole pitchers, and Perranoski was the Dodger reliever. The Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, interfered with the Dodgers' plans to start Koufax for game one of the series. Koufax saw it the other way around, and refused to pitch.

This was the blame for throwing the season rotation out of synch. Don Drysdale started game one and lasted only three innnings, being tagged for four runs. Koufax, who wasn't used to following Drysdale in the rotation, was shutout in game two.

The Orioles won the series four games to none. Koufax, who went 27-9 in the season, retired after the series.
5. In 1906, the Chicago Cubs were the first Major League team to surpass the 110-win mark in a season, when they went 116-36. The 110-mark would not be surpassed again until Cleveland's 1954 season of 111 wins. High hopes for a World Series title was in order with the Cubs' famous double-play combination of Tinker, Evers, and Chance. They lost the series four games to two to which team?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The others were all NL teams along with the Cubs. The White Sox went 93-58 in the season. The Cubs were in their first of three consecutive World Series, and were outscored 22-18 in the six games series. No home runs were hit in the series, and Ed Walsh won two games for the White Sox.
6. Although he was the 1968 American League MVP and Cy Young winner, this pitcher fell apart in the World Series. His team did win however. Who is he?

Answer: Denny McLain

The 1968 World Series saw the Detroit Tigers up against the St. Louis Cardinals. McLain was the season MVP and Cy Young winner, then went a dismal 1-2 in the series. The Tigers won it all four games to three, and Detroit pitcher Mickey Lolich, who was 3-0 in the series, took home the series MVP honors.
7. This team won three consecutive National League pennants, and were the heavy odds-on favorite to win Major League's first World Series in 1903. They lost the series five games to three, mainly due to poor performances by their high-priced players. Which team was this?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

After hitting 34 home runs in the season, the Pirates could muster only one in the series. It was Jimmy Sebring's game one shot, the first in World Series history. Sebring was the only Pirate batter who hit over .300 with at least three at-bats. Sam Leever, who went 25-7 for the Pirates in the regular season, went 0-2 in the series. Deacon Phillippe who went 25-7, lost two games also. Boston's winning pitching came through from the arms of Cy Young and Bill Dinneen.
8. This 1967 National League MVP helped his St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series, but certainly didn't help their series cause. The Cardinals won the series anyway. He had only three hits and batted .103. Who was this first baseman?

Answer: Orlando Cepeda

The Cardinals went up against Triple Crown hitter Carl Yastrzemski and the Boston Red Sox. Yaz batted .400 with three home runs, but the Red Sox lost the series four games to three. Orlando had 183 hits with 25 home runs in the regular season. It was Cepeda's second World Series, and he batted .158 in his first one with the Giants in 1962.
9. The Boston Red Sox had high hopes going into the 2004 World Series because they hadn't won a World Series since 1918. Boston still had the 'Curse of the Bambino' hanging over heads also. But, they defeated a team who was the heavy favorite after winning 105 games. Which team did the Red Sox finally lose the curse to by winning four games to none?

Answer: Cardinals

The Cardinals went 105-57 under Tony LaRussa. St. Louis hit 214 home runs in the season, but had only one hitter clear the wall. It was Jim Edmonds who hit two. Scott Rolen who batted .314 in the season, was shut down going 0-for-15 in the series. Four separate Cardinal pitchers lost a game. Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez was the series MVP, batting .412 with a home run.
10. In 1953, the New York Yankees were seeking their fifth consecutive World Series crown. They were underdogs against a team that they had just beaten in the 1952 series, but one that was expected to dethrone the Yankees. Who was this Roy Campanella MVP led team that lost the series in 1953?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

All the others listed were American League teams. The Dodgers, after losing four games to three in a close 1952 series, were favorites to win it all after winning 105 games in the season in 1953. It wasn't to be however. The Dodgers lost it all in game six in the bottom of the ninth inning. Billy Martin singled home Hank Bauer, and the Yankees' World Series streak continued. Campanella, the season MVP for the Dodgers, batted .273 in the series.
