Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Major League ballpark was the first to host the games for both teams that played in the same World Series?

Answer: Polo Grounds

The Polo Grounds was shared by both the New York Giants and the New York Yankees during the 1921 season, just prior to Yankee Stadium being built in 1923. The two met in the World Series at the Polo Grounds for all the games with the Giants winning. It happened again in 1922 with the Giants being victorious again.

In 1923, the two met again, but in separate ballparks, and the Yankees pulled off their first World Series crown in the new Yankee Stadium.
2. Who was the first person ejected from a World Series game, not for him arguing any call or fighting?

Answer: Joe Medwick

Medwick of the Cardinals, although Major League records show that he was officially ejected in 1934, was removed by the umpires for his own protection from Detroit Tiger fans. The previous inning saw him instigate a brawl for sliding into third base rather hard.

The fans would not have any of this, and when Medwick took the field in the following inning, the fans hurled everything at him. He was escorted off the field for his own protection. With tensions high, the Cardinals won that game seven 11-0, and the World Series four games to three.
3. Eight times throughout the 20th century, fans saw the New York Yankees sweep their opponents in World Series play. Only two franchises in the National League swept their opponents twice in series play. One franchise was the Cincinnati Reds. Which National League franchise was the other?

Answer: New York / San Francisco

The New York Giants swept the Yankees in 1922, the second of three consecutive meetings. They also swept the Cleveland Indians in 1954, the season that the Indians won 111 games. The Yankees led the American League with eight sweeps, but also led the league in most times being swept themselves.

They were put down by the 1922 Giants, the Dodgers in 1963, and the Reds in 1976. The Reds' other sweep was in 1990 against the Athletics.
4. Who was the first pitcher in Major League history to win three games in one World Series?

Answer: Bill Dinneen

It was the first-ever World Series in 1903 that Dinneen won three games and lost one in the five games to three World Series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bill pitched in 29 innings for his Boston American team, allowing 29 hits and struck out 28. Cy Young went 2-1 against the Pirates for the other two wins.
5. Which Major League team was the biggest loser in the 1910s, going to four World Series and losing them all?

Answer: New York Giants

The Giants lost three consecutive World Series from 1911-1913, twice to the Athletics and once to the Red Sox. They would also lose to the White Sox in 1917. They would come back winning the 1921 and 1922 World Series against the Yankees, then losing to the pinstripes in 1923. They would also lose to Walter Johnson and the Senators in the following season of 1924.
6. Which pitcher under the age of 21, threw a shutout in a World Series game?

Answer: Jim Palmer

Palmer was in only his second season in Major League Baseball when his Orioles took on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1966 World Series. The Orioles swept the Dodgers four games to none, while Palmer shut the Dodgers out in game two, 6-0. It would be Jim's only appearance in the series, but he would go on to five more World Series and win three more games.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990.
7. In the shades of the New York Yankee franchise, the Atlanta Braves dominated the decade of the 1990s and went to an amazing five World Series. This was even with the 1994 postseason being canceled due to a players strike. The Braves would win only one of those five World Series in which season?

Answer: 1995

They were in it in 1991 in a loss to the Twins, 1992 in a loss to the Blue Jays, and 1996 and 1999 in losses to the Yankees. The only World Series crown that they could pull out was in 1995 against the Indians, four games to two. The series MVP was Atlanta's pitcher Tom Glavine.
8. The list for the most World Series career games played is crowded with Yankee greats. Who was the first non-Yankee to play in 50 World Series games?

Answer: Frank Frisch

Frisch shared his 19 seasons between the Giants and Cardinals, retiring in 1937. Frisch played in 50 games, nine more than the great Babe Ruth. Frankie had 58 hits with 10 doubles, three triples, and no home runs. His final series was with Dizzy Dean and the Cardinals in 1934.
9. Which umpire provided his services for a record 18 World Series?

Answer: Bill Klem

Klem umpired in more than twice the series as any other umpire. Klem showing tremendous numbers, he umpired the World Series in 1908, 1909, 1911-1915, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924, 1926, 1929, 1931, 1932, 1934, and 1940. Remarkably, Bill somehow was lucky enough to avoid the 1919 Black Sox Series. He died in 1951 at the age of 77.
10. Who was the first player to win two World Series MVP awards?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The World Series MVP Award began in 1955 with Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres winning the inaugural award. Koufax came along and won it in 1963 and 1965 with the Dodgers. Both Jenkins and Kaline didn't win one, and Robinson won it in 1966 with the Orioles.
