Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Leavetaking" opens with a voiceover introduction by Moiraine Sedai, describing her mission to find someone. Who is she looking for?

Answer: The Dragon Reborn

Moiraine Damodred, portrayed by Rosamund Pike, introduces the world of "The Wheel of Time" succinctly, explaining in a few sentences that the world was once broken when the male Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends failed in their attempt to "cage Darkness itself". She describes how "the seas boiled, mountains were swallowed up, cities burned", and that the female Aes Sedai were left to try to preserve the world in the aftermath.

More importantly, she also explains that souls are reincarnated by the turning of the Wheel of Time, and that the man who led those male Aes Sedai in the distant past - known as the Dragon - had been reborn a mere 20 years ago.
2. We next see five Aes Sedai (female channelers of the One Power) on horseback chasing down a man on foot. He is already going mad from his use of the corrupted male half of the Source. The women are all wearing what colour?

Answer: Red

The Aes Sedai are a powerful organization of women channelers who are divided into different factions called 'Ajahs', each with a different purpose. Moiraine Sedai is of the Blue Ajah, which follows the pursuit of justice and noble causes.

The five Aes Sedai in this scene are of the Red Ajah, which has a much more specific focus - that of preventing another Breaking of the World by hunting down any man who can channel and severing his link to the Power.
3. After witnessing the madman's capture from afar, Moiraine and her warder (Lan Mandragoran) discuss where they will go next in their quest. She tells him of the rumours of four ta'veren in a secluded region known by what name?

Answer: The Two Rivers

Although not explained at this time in the show, the novels describe ta'veren as people who have a great affect on (or are greatly affected by) the Pattern woven by the Wheel of Time.

What Moiraine does say is that the four rumoured ta'veren in the Two Rivers are all of the right age to be the prophecied Dragon reborn.

Moiraine's warder (protector and companion, bonded to her by the One Power), Lan Mondragoran, is portrayed by Daniel Henney.
4. Cutting to the region in question, we witness a coming-of-age ceremony by the Women's Circle of the village that involves the forming of a braid and an unexpected drop into a fast-moving river. What is the name of the Village Wisdom who leads the ceremony?

Answer: Nynaeve

Nynaeve al'Meara, played by Zoë Robins, is very young to have such a position (only in her mid-twenties), but she has the mysterious ability to 'Listen to the Wind', which allows her to sense things about the world around her that others cannot. She is a very fierce young woman who is ready to protect her people from anything (including questing Aes Sedai).

As the Village Wisdom, Nynaeve leads the ceremony that inducts Egwene al'Vere (played by Madeleine Madden) into the ranks of the Women's Circle.
5. The four prospective ta'veren are introduced, beginning with Egwene al'Vere (the young woman with the new braid) and continuing with Rand al'Thor, Perrin Aybara and Mat Cauthon. Which of these is NOT one of the things we learn about them?

Answer: Egwene is an orphan

Fans of Robert Jordan's novels will see some changes to the characters they know and love with these introductions, perhaps most noticeably with Perrin (not married in the books) and Mat (who is more mischievous than addicted in the books), but this is not unexpected in screen adaptations. Suffice it to say that Egwene, whose parents are alive and well and running the Winespring Inn, is not an orphan.

Rand al'Thor is played by Josha Stradowski, Perrin Aybara by Marcus Rutherford, and Mat Cauthon plays Barney Harris.
6. Everyone in the village is preparing to celebrate the spring festival, which involves the lighting of lanterns to guide home the souls of deceased loved ones. What is the name of the festival?

Answer: Bel Tine

As with most festivals, Bel Tine is a time of celebration, and involves music and dancing, in addition to the more solemn ceremony of the lanterns (which is not part of Bel Tine in the books). This year's celebration ends up with a rather unexpected interruption, as disaster strikes in the form of an attack by monstrous creatures of the Dark One.
7. Newly arrived in the village, Moiraine and Lan soon find evidence that they are not the only ones looking for the prophesied one. As the festivities begin, the villagers are suddenly attacked by fierce, misshapen animal-like creatures. What are they called?

Answer: Trollocs

In addition to sensing the presence of a Myrddraal (also called a Fade), Lan finds a number of skinned and mutilated animals in the woods. He and Moiraine speak of leaving, but they stay and are able to be an effective fighting duo when the Trollocs attack.

Magically bonded as they are, Moiraine and Lan fight fluidly together, with Moiraine drawing on the One Power to throw fireballs and call lightning (amongst other things) while Lan whirls around her with a spinning blade, cutting down his enemies with ease.
8. Back at their own farm for the night, Rand and his father Tam are also attacked by one of the creatures. Tam fights it with a sword, but it's Rand who kills the monstrosity. What does he use to dispatch it?

Answer: A fireplace poker

When the Trolloc breaks through their door, Rand's father Tam (portrayed by Michael McElhatton) pulls a sword from a case hidden under his bed and draws the beast's attention away from Rand. In the ensuing fight, despite his skill with the blade, Tam is injured by the Trolloc's brute force. Just when it seems like Tam might die, Rand grabs the poker from beside the fireplace and rams it through the Trolloc's throat from behind.

Rand then brings his father back to the village, arriving in the early morning to find the other villagers in shock from the attack, dealing with death and destruction. Fortunately for Tam, Moiraine is able to heal the poisoned injury.
9. During the fight in the village, Perrin accidentally strikes a loved one with an axe. Who is killed?

Answer: His wife Laila

Perrin and Laila are blacksmiths together, and when they retreat into their smithy, they are followed by a savage Trolloc, who very nearly overwhelms them both. Perrin manages to kill it with an axe from amongst the tools and weapons in the forge. But, caught in the frenzied moment of fighting for his life against the Trolloc, he turns also strikes Laila in the abdomen, cutting her deeply. All he is able to do is hold her as she dies in his arms.
10. Who is carried off by the creatures at the very end of the fight?

Answer: Nynaeve

Just when it seems as though they have pushed the Trollocs back, Nynaeve is grabbed by her braids and dragged along at a run until the Trolloc who grabbed her disappears from view. Egwene, fighting side-by-side with Nynaeve, can only watch in horror as the Wisdom is carried off.

The next morning, while everyone is in shock from the night's attack, they see more Trollocs coming down the side of the mountain towards the village -- at least 300, in Lan's estimation. Moiraine convinces Rand, Perrin, Mat and Egwene that it is because of them that the creatures have come; that she believes one of them is the Dragon reborn. And so Moiraine convinces them that must all leave, in order to protect their loved ones from further Trolloc attacks and to keep the Dark One from having him or her.
