Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the aftermath of the battle in the previous episode, "Blood Calls Blood" begins with a funeral for those who fell in the fighting, including Kerene Sedai. As he lays Kerene in her grave, what item does her Warder Stepin take from her body?

Answer: Her Great Serpent ring (with a green gem for her Ajah)

What we see in this opening scene funeral is that the circle (or wheel) is a prominent aspect in the world of "The Wheel of Time". All of the bodies are buried next to each other in two concentric circles, looking like so many spokes on a wheel. And the fallen from both sides of the conflict are buried together in the ceremony, showing reverence and respect for all. Moiraine's benediction over Kerene's body is "May the last embrace of the mother welcome you home."

When Stepin (Peter Franzén) lays Kerene Sedai (Clare Perkins) into her grave, he collects her Great Serpent ring, which every Aes Sedai wears and which shows their Ajah affiliation. The custom (as presented in the show, if not the books) is for an Aes Sedai's ring to be returned to the White Tower at her death. Later in the episode at the White Tower, we see Stepin undergo a ceremony where he places the ring in a receptacle of molten metal, melting it down.
2. After the opening credits, we see that everyone is approaching Tar Valon. How much time has passed since the events of the previous episode?

Answer: One month

Without seeing a map of the world of "The Wheel of Time", it is difficult to get a handle on the scope of the distances to be traveled in the land. (The map can be seen on the show's website, and in the bonus materials provided by Amazon's streaming service). Suffice it to say, it has taken a month for each of the different traveling groups (the Aes Sedai / the Tinkers / Rand & Mat) to reach Tar Valon from where we last saw them in episode four.

As Lan and Moiraine discuss whether or not the other four young folk from the Two Rivers have arrived, Moiraine assures him that they if they are there, they will find them, and if they are not... they will find them.

Moiraine Damodred is portrayed by Rosamund Pike, while her Warder al'Lan Mandragoran is played by Daniel Henney.
3. As Rand and Mat enter Tar Valon, they are astounded by the grandeur of the city. What is Rand's exclamation?

Answer: Blood and Ashes!

There are many strange turns of phrase that can be found sprinkled thoughout the many books of "The Wheel of Time", and 'Blood and Ashes!' is probably one of the most recognizable for fans of the books. It was very gratifying to hear it for the first time in the show.

The other three examples can also be found in the books, and may be heard in the show at some point in the future, who knows?

Josha Stradowski plays Rand al'Thor, while Barney Harris is Mat Cauthon.
4. Who appears in the background in the streets of Tar Valon more than once, whistling while watching Mat and Rand?

Answer: Padan Fain

Padan Fain (Johann Myers) was introduced in the first episode "Leavetaking" as the peddler who arrives to the Two Rivers in time for the Bel Tine festival. He bought a stolen bracelet from Mat, and then was later seen chuckling quietly to himself and walking away calmly as the Trollocs ravished the Two Rivers.

The whistling that he does is also heard in the first episode, then again during episode two, "Shadow's Waiting" when Mat finds the dagger in Shadar Logoth.

How does Fain come to be in Tar Valon at the same time that the boys (and all the others) arrive?
5. Arriving at the White Tower, Lan and Moiraine take Nynaeve somewhere to prevent her from being snagged by the other Aes Sedai and forced to become a Novice (Aes Sedai in training)? Where is Nynaeve hidden away?

Answer: The Warder's Quarters

After Nynaeve's awesome display of using the One Power in the last episode, Moiraine knows that she will be a prize commodity within the political White Tower. Each of the Ajahs will want to recruit a woman of such power into their ranks, or at the very least rest upon the prestige of bringing such a powerful channeler to the Tower for training.

But Moiraine also knows that Nynaeve has little trust for Aes Sedai, and until that moment of unleashed Power, Nynaeve didn't even realize that she could channel. With her own mission to find the Dragon Reborn, Moiraine cannot afford to let Nynaeve be snapped up by the Tower (yet), and warns her, "Do not underestimate the women in this Tower. Each of them has her own goal, her own agenda, her own pride and ambition."

Nynaeve al'Meara is played by Zoë Robins.
6. Egwene and Perrin, still traveling with the Tuatha'an, are captured by the Whitecloaks in sight of the White Tower. What did the Tinkers do when approached by the Children of the Light?

Answer: Linked arms and stood fast

The Traveling People (a.k.a. Tinkers or Tuatha'an) follow the Way of the Leaf, resolving to do no violence, so they definitely did not attack the Whitecloaks. Yet, neither are they cowards, and when Valda spots Egwene and Perrin from a distance and demands that the Tinkers turn them over, they refuse to comply, standing together in defiance with arms linked.

This doesn't stop the Whitecloaks from laying into them with their fists, but as Aram (Daryl McCormack) comments to Perrin and Egwene as they run to find a hiding place, he knows that they would not actually kill any Tinkers, in spite of their seeming ruthlessness.

Marcus Rutherford plays the part of Perrin Aybara, while Madeleine Madden is Egwene al'Vere.
7. In the library of their inn, Rand encounters someone who introduces himself as Loial, son of Arent, son of Halan. What type of creature is Loial?

Answer: Ogier

Ogier are a non-human race in the world of "The Wheel of Time" that are very long-lived and are generally reclusive, staying close to their Steddings. Loial (portrayed beautifully by Hammed Animashaun) is a slow and careful speaker, very learned, but not quite understanding of the fast-paced world of humans.

He *does* recognize that Rand looks like a typical Aielman, largely because of his red hair.
8. Upon hearing the noises outside their inn, Rand follows Mat to find a place to watch as the False Dragon is paraded through the street on the way to the White Tower. Where do Mat and Rand find a place to watch the False Dragon pass by?

Answer: A second-storey balcony

The captured False Dragon Logain (Álvaro Morte) is led through the streets of Tar Valon by drums and banners, once again in a cage like we saw him in in episode four. Drawn by the sound of the drums, Mat and Rand find a perch in a second-storey window/balcony from which to watch.

As Logain goes by, however, the man spots Mat and Rand above him, and he starts to laugh maniacally. But does he really do so, or is it just Mat's strange madness seeing it so?
9. Eamon Valda, the Whitecloak Questioner, tortures Perrin in an effort to force Egwene to reveal her ability to channel. They are able to escape, but who helps by simultaneously attacking the camp?

Answer: Wolves

Eamon Valda, portrayed so despicably by Abdul Salis, is at his zealous best here, forcing Egwene and Perrin into a no-win situation. He will torture Perrin to death unless Egwene can channel to save him, but if she does so, then she will forfeit her own life.

As the torture continues, howling can be heard in the background, growing closer and more insistent. When Egwene channels enough to throw a weak fireball at Child Valda, he just laughs at her, but she shifts her efforts to burning through the ropes holding Perrin down. His rage shows itself in his eyes as they turn a burnished golden-yellow... like the eyes of a wolf.

Valda is so taken aback that Egwene is able to stab him and she and Perrin escape. Outside the tent, the Whitecloak camp is under attack by wolves, and Perrin somehow knows that they wont also attack him or Egwene.
10. Stepin ultimately commits suicide rather than live without Kerene and the Warder bond. In what way does he accomplish this?

Answer: Stabs himself

All of the other Warders and the Aes Sedai are fully aware of Stepin's struggle. The Warder bond is such a powerful connection that it's loss is shattering. Bonding with a new Aes Sedai can help, but it is an extremely difficult step to take.

Even watching for the potential suicide attempt, Lan is unable to prevent it as Stepin outwits him. He drugs Lan with Nynaeve's 'goatstongue tea', which allows him to slip away and complete the act, in the manner of our Japanese Seppuku.

At the subsequent funeral, Lan takes on the role of the 'designated mourner', expressing the grief of all present in a moving portrayal of anguish.
