Answer: Damon Lindelof

When the opening credits rolled, you could see that Damon Lindelof was credited with penning this episode of "Lost." For the first five seasons of the show, Lindelof wrote 116 of the episodes for the show. He also wrote episodes for the TV series', "Crossing Jordan", "Wasteland", and "Nash Bridges."
2. Which survivor first coined the term "tabula rasa" in this episode?

Answer: None of these

The term "tabula rasa" was first coined by political philosopher, John Locke, who lived from 1632 to 1704. The idea behind "tabula rasa" is there is no such thing as innate knowledge and everyone is born on a blank state and gains knowledge through experience.

Much of Locke's ideas were expanded upon in the U.S. Constitution. The character of John Locke on "Lost" is based off of the real life political philosopher. Surprisingly, nobody used the term "tabula rasa" in this episode.
3. In a flashback, which man woke Kate up?

Answer: Ray Mullen

In a flashback, at the beginning of the episode, a man woke Kate up and he was identified as Ray Mullen. He asked Kate what she was doing sleeping in his barn and Kate told him her name was "Annie" and she needed a ride to town. Ray offers Kate a job and she accepts it but she eventually decides to leave town. Ray offered to drive her to catch the train but, in reality, he wanted to drive her to the authorities and turn her in to collect the reward money.

Answer: Edward Mars

While Ray was driving Kate, to the authorities, she realized Ray was not planning to take her to catch a train since she turned around and saw a U.S. Marshal, who was revealed to be Edward Mars. Kate grabbed the wheel and caused the car to crash. The vehicle ended up burning and Ray was critically injured so, rather than escape, Kate helped Ray.
5. In the first scene, on the island, who was revealed as NOT being a member of the signal party?

Answer: Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

When we first saw scenes, on the island, members of the entire signal party, which was composed of Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Sayid, Boone, and Shannon was coming down from the mountain. Hugo was not a member of this signal party. They had just seen a transmission that, if working, would have helped them to call for help and get off the island but it did not work.

They decided not to tell anyone since they did not want to get their hopes up.
6. A fight broke out over who should keep a gun. Who got to keep it?

Answer: Kate Austen

The signal party found a gun, up the mountain, and they had a hard time coming to a consensus as to who should get the gun. A fight broke out but it was stopped when they all agreed to not fight and to discuss who would become the owner of the gun. They all agreed that Kate would be the owner so they gave her the gun and she accepted it.
7. The survivors tended to another U.S. Marshal with what name?

Answer: Marshal Mars

For the first couple of episodes, a U.S. Marshal on the doomed Oceanic Flight 815 named Marshal Mars was critically injured and the survivors kept tending to him. In this episode, they continued to help him in hopes he got better while the survivors tended to Marshal Mars, Jack and Hugo learned of Kate's past as a convict and a fugitive on the run from the law.

Answer: Jack Shephard

Many of the survivors believed that Jack, a doctor, could not help Marshal Mars recover, from his wounds, and they feared Marshal would die. In the beginning of the episode, Marshal spoke to Jack and told him he wanted to speak to Kate to find out what favor she asked for before the plane broke apart. Jack went to go get Kate but he ran into Hurley, first, and Hurley informed him he saw Kate with a gun.
9. Who punctured the U.S. Marshal's lung?

Answer: James "Sawyer" Ford

After Jack got done talking to Hurley, he went to the tent to look for Kate to tell her to go speak to Marshal Mars and he then heard a gun shot in the tent. Sawyer walked out of the tent and said he shot Marshal in the heart to put him out of his misery.

However, Marshal was still alive since Sawyer hit his lung, not his heart, and Jack commented it would take hours to stop the bleeding.

Michael saw his son, Walt, and he realized that Walt had a conversation with John Locke. He asked Walt what they spoke about and Walt replied that John claimed there was a miracle that would take place, on the island. Michael informed his son that he wanted him to steer clear, of John Locke, since he thought he would be a danger to his son.
