Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the first person we see on the screen?

Answer: the victim

This was Anna Stravinska; she is in the Catholic Church and being watched by the murderer. He is to catch up with her on the train and strangle her, unknowingly witnessed by Miss Marple's friend, Elspeth McGillyguddy.
2. What was the headline on the newspapers on the day of the murder?

Answer: 'Russian Space Tragedy'

This was a reference to the world's first artificial satellite being burned up on re-entry to the earth's atmosphere in 1957 after barely 50 days in orbit. The name 'Sputnik' means 'travelling companion of the world'.
3. After being told that without a body there is no murder, Miss Marple encourages a young friend to take the post of housekeeper at Rutherford Hall (the most likely place that the body could have been dumped). Her name was Lucy Eyelesbarrow, but what was the name of the incompetent housekeeper she replaced?

Answer: Mrs Amy Kidder

Mrs Kidder is seen in the filthy kitchen as Lucy arrives at the house, and Lucy defers to her until she leaves for home - then she sets to work cleaning up the whole serving area and proves her worth to the family as a housekeeper.
4. What decorations did Brian win in the war, and which were proudly shown to Lucy by his son, Alexander?

Answer: DFC with Bar and DSO with Bar

Having a Bar to a decoration means that it was won a second time; DFC stands for 'Distinguished Flying Cross' and DSO for 'Distinguished Service Order'.
5. Where did Lucy find the body?

Answer: in the Long Barn

The Tack Room was used by the Police for their Incident Room (the name can be clearly seen on the door). Lucy opened the Long Barn for Alexander and his friend, and found the body in a sarcophagus in a store area of statues and other ancient artefacts.
6. How many children did Luthor Crakenthorpe have?

Answer: six

They were: Emma, who stayed at home with him and was engaged to Dr Quimper; Harold, who was a merchant banker and who was killed in the course of the programme; Cedric, who was a wandering artist who came home only for the Birthday Dinner each year; Alfred, who dealt in used cars from premises in Warren Street; Edie, who died, and whose husband came to the Birthday Dinner with his son each year; and then there was Edmund, who was killed in the retreat at Dunkirk in 1940.
7. What is Miss Marple's telephone number?

Answer: St Mary Mead 236

Miss Marple clearly says this as she answers the telephone in this, and other episodes.
8. What tune does Cedric whistle after Brian caught him kissing Lucy in the kitchen?

Answer: 'Teddy Bear's Picnic'

Brian fancied Lucy, but she was frustrated by his puppy-dog devotion and the manner in which he slavishly followed her every suggestion, even to the extent of quitting his job and buying an aeroplane. It was only after she overheard Cedric give his alibi to the police that she realised he was a hardened womaniser and not for her.
9. The murderer killed Harold because he thought he knew his identity. He shot him and rigged the scene to make it seem that Harold had been caught in a mantrap and shot himself in his agony. Which foot did he place in the trap?

Answer: right

When Harold did not come for dinner, Lucy reported his absence to the police who went hunting for him. The death pointed the finger of suspicion clearly at a person in, or connected with, the Crackenthrope family, and it was Miss Marple's visit to Harold's widow, Alice, which tipped the balance to discover the identity of the murderer.
10. Acting on something Lucy said to him, Brian bought an aeroplane and brought it to Rutherford Hall, telling Lucy that he was starting a business called 'Eastley Light Freight'. What colour was the aeroplane?

Answer: blue

Lucy was so disgusted that he acted on her advice to the extent that he had altered his entire lifestyle in a moment that she walked away from him, but his subsequent bravery in capturing the murderer led her to give Brian the benefit of the doubt. Miss Marple was to pronounce that she did not love him yet, but would come to do so by the third child.
