Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Caribbean island was Miss Marple recuperating after her illness?

Answer: Barbados

She was staying in a hotel owned and run by Tim and Molly Kendal, and was very homesick, especially for the British clock! There were a fair number of references to what time it was back home, and at the end of the programme she admitted to having missed the wet British weather as well.
2. Major Paulgrave had a whole collection of photographs to illustrate his many stories, and three of these are described in the course of the programme. Which of the following was NOT one of his photographs?

Answer: a herd of elephants

He was about to show Miss Marple a photo of 'a murderer' but did not. Miss Marple was to conclude that the murderer was to kill the Major because of a fear of being discovered.
3. At what time did Miss Marple go for a nocturnal walk, being unable to sleep due to jetlag?

Answer: 2.30am

Her clock is clearly seen as she lies wakeful, and tells herself that it is only 7.30pm at home. The next morning Major Paulgrove is found dead.
4. What hymn is sung at Major Paulgrove's graveside?

Answer: 'Onward Christian Soldiers'

'Abide with Me' was one of those sung at Victoria's funeral later in the programme. The Major was later to be dug up and a post mortem (autopsy) performed to ascertain the cause of death. They did the digging at night, presumably not to upset the holiday makers and residents on the island.
5. Victoria invited Miss Marple to her village to meet her Aunt - how did she describe her village?

Answer: just off HIghway 1A

Miss Marple enjoyed tea with Aunt Johnson, talking about England and villages in general. She also learned a little about Victoria, information which was to come in handy later in the programme when Victoria was also killed.
6. Rafiel's ambition was to own his own island, and was dictating a letter to Esther with this in mind. How much money did he transfer to Current Account number 1 (407654) for this?

Answer: £4,000

Rafiel was brought up in an orphanage in Peckham (London), and made his fortune as an adult. He was an obnoxious man, but was able to recognise quality in others and not afraid to admit when he made a mistake, Once he saw that Miss Marple was an astute thinker, he was as gracious as he was able (it is not often we see Miss Marple behave anything less than politely to anyone, but she has her moments in this programme!)
7. What did Rafiel call Miss Marple when he first called over to her to speak to her about the death of Major Paulgrove?

Answer: Miss Marble

Rafiel was the unseen central 'puppet-master' character in 'Nemesis', later in the series. He was to leave instructions in his Will regarding the mystery surrounding his son, and had been so impressed by Miss Marple's detective abilities that he was to ask her to find out the truth.
8. What was the colour of the taxi which was to take Miss Marple to Victoria's funeral?

Answer: red

As she came away from the graveside, Inspector Weston told her about Nine Night. On the ninth day after a death, the dead would punish the murderer, which was why they placed a whip in each hand of the corpse before burial.
9. Who was accidently killed on the platform on Nine Night?

Answer: Lucky

Molly was the intended victim, having been systematically poisoned by her husband for some months, but Lucky had been swimming that night, and the Tim mistook her in the darkness for his wife, who was supposed to be there waiting for him.
10. How much money did Rafiel intend to leave Esther in his will?

Answer: £55,000

It was for this that Tim wanted to kill Molly. Miss Marple was able to save her from being murdered, but sadly was not able to save Lucky in time.
