Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the estate agents who sold Hillside?

Answer: Galbraith and Penderley

Giles and Gwenda Reed were driving along the Lehampton Road when Gwenda spotted the 'For Sale' sign and they decided to take a look at the house. Although Giles said it was £500 over their budget, they bought it because Gwenda loved it.
2. There were a few pointers to the fact that Gwenda had been in the house before - which of the following was NOT one of them?

Answer: knowing that the bathroom geyser was temperamental

She also knew that there should have been steps leading to a lawn, and that the view to the sea should have been unrestricted. When she went into the bathroom, she mentioned celluloid ducks, even though bathroom ducks were by that time made of plastic.

When they were being shown around, she also had a mini flashback when on the stairs, and was able to name the woman she believed was murdered - Helen.
3. What was the name of the play attended by Miss Marple, Giles and Gwenda, and Miss Marple's nephew Raymond and his wife Jo?

Answer: The Duchess of Malfi

It was the line 'Cover her face, my eyes dazzle. She died young' which caused Gwenda to scream aloud with emerging memories. Later, at Raymond's home, Miss Marple chatted with her and after hearing about Hillside, told her that she was not going mad - that in all likelihood she had lived in that house before.
4. In the course of their investigation, Giles and Gwenda were told how much money her father Kelvin had paid to rent St Catherine's, as Hillside was called then. How much was this?

Answer: eight shillings a week

It was a large house. When they were being shown around, they were told that it had six bedrooms, not seven as mentioned by the estate agents, as the seventh was really a 'dressing room'. It had large grounds and a magnificent view of the sea once the shrubbery was removed. Eight shillings a week before WWII was a lot of money.
5. What relationship was Dr James Kennedy to Helen, the woman Gwenda was sure she had seen being strangled?

Answer: half brother

To all intents and purposes, Dr Kennedy was seen as a loving brother, but in reality he was so devoted to Helen that it was to be her downfall as she was desperate to escape from him.
6. Kelvin was to die in a mental hospital, a fact Giles and Gwenda were to discover on visiting Dr Penrose. He died believing that he had murdered his wife. There was one problem with the facts of his story and Gwenda's memory of the event. What was this?

Answer: it was in the wrong room

Kelvin confessed to killing Helen in the bedroom, while Gwenda remembered seeing her strangled in the hallway, from the top of the staircase. The fact that there was no body caused another problem - Kelvin did not confess to removing the body. Dr Kennedy insisted that Helen had left the area because she had written to him twice.
7. What was the number on the train by which Gwenda and Giles returned from the mental hospital?

Answer: 7827

It was during this journey that Gwenda read her father's diary from the time he was in the hospital. He believed that Helen had been drugging him, but in reality this was done by Dr Kennedy.
8. As the investigation continued, we learn that Helen was involved with four men in a short space of time, two in England, one on the boat to India, and another on the boat on the way back. Which of the following men was the first in this list?

Answer: Jacky Afflick

After her romantic friendship with Jacky had been squashed, Helen got engaged to Walter Fane and agreed to join him in India to get married. However, on the boat going there, she fell in love with Richard Erskine, a married man. Knowing that she did not love Walter, she broke off the engagement, and on the return journey met and agreed to marry the newly-widowed Kelvin who was going back to England with his baby daughter, Gwenda.
9. What was the name of the ex-housemaid who was killed when she came back to Dilmouth?

Answer: Lily

Lily had told the cook, Edith, that she did not believe Helen had left, because she took the wrong clothes with her. She took parts of outfits rather than whole ensembles, and left behind favourites. When she wrote to Dr Kennedy to ask about the newspaper advertisement, she unknowingly worded her letter to sound like a prelude to blackmail and thereby caused her own death.
10. Who suggested that the garden steps be dug up to find Helen's body?

Answer: Miss Marple

Miss Marple explained that it was Gwenda's memory of steps and a view to the sea which suggested to her that the body was buried under the steps. The perfect hiding place was under shrubbery and concrete.
