Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At what time did Rex Fortescue ask his secretary to bring tea to the office?

Answer: 9.40am

This was a surprise to his staff, as it was so early. When the tea tray came, he was in convulsions, and died.
2. What was the name of the cleaner at Yew Tree Lodge?

Answer: Ellen

We only see Ellen twice, and only hear her name once, when Miss Dove speaks to her the first time. Gladys is the maid, and the cook and valet/butler are called Crump.
3. Jennifer wears a four-string of pearls in the programme - where is the ornate clasp seen?

Answer: below her left ear

She is seen wearing this ornament on a few occasions in the programme, and each time it has the clasp clearly visible to her left. Jennifer was married to Percival, one of Rex's sons, and in the course of the story we learn that she is the daughter of the man Rex once partnered on an unsuccessful mining operation in Africa.
4. What was the connection between Rex Fortescue and Miss Marple?

Answer: Gladys

Miss Marple had trained Gladys as a maid; it was her knowledge of Gladys that enabled her to solve the mystery so quickly. Unfortunately she was not quick enough to save Gladys from being killed as well.
5. The widow, Adele, was having an affair with Mr Vivian DuBois, who played golf with her on a regular basis. Where was he living?

Answer: the Dormy House Hotel

Vivian was a suspect for a short while, as to kill Rex enabled Adele to inherit £100,000, and Adele's Will named him as sole inheritor. Miss Marple, however, soon told the police that such was not the case.
6. Where was Rex's son Lance living when he telegraphed that he was coming home?

Answer: Paris

He telegraphed his father that he 'expected the fatted calf', giving the impression that they had made up their differences and he was returning home to the bosom of his family. This however, as a smokescreen as he knew his father was already dead.
7. What colour were the curtains in the billiard room at Yew Tree Lodge?

Answer: brown with a cream fern pattern

The police were conducting an interview in the billiard room and the curtains were in plain sight throughout the scene.
8. After Aunt Effie invited Miss Marple to stay, the family sat down to dinner together, and while the table was being cleared everyone was still and silent, but for Percival who was fiddling with something - what was it?

Answer: a napkin ring

This was quite marked as it was the only movement at the table but for the clearing of plates. The camera panned around showing the still faces of a family still reeling from shock from the deaths of Rex, Adele, and then Gladys.
9. What was the registration number on the Bentley that Lance and Patricia drove away in?

Answer: GXA 579

During the driving scenes this number is clearly visible, and the number is given on the police radio. Miss Marple told the police to stop Lance leaving the country, and they put out a call to keep the vehicle under observation. Lance brought the car to a stop, confessed to his wife, ordered her out of the car and then drove off, to be involved in a fatal accident a moment later.
10. In order to enlist Gladys' help, the murderer pretended to be someone else - what false name did he give her?

Answer: Albert

Lance met Gladys at a holiday camp, and made her believed he was in love with her. He told her that Rex had conned him out of money and asked her to get a job at Yew Tree Lodge in order to put a truth serum into his food so he would confess his duplicity before witnesses. Gladys did not know that she was to be a killer. Putting a handful of rye in his pocket was a twisted turn of the knife because Jennifer had been taunting her father-in-law with dead blackbirds to remind him of the Blackbird Mine where her father died.
