Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the stars of "Alias Smith and Jones?"

Answer: Pete Duel and Ben Murphy

Ben Murphy appeared on television from 1968 until 2007. After "Alias Smith and Jones," he also starred in "Griff," "Gemini Man," and "The Dirty Dozen." Sadly Pete Duel died during the second season of the series. He was in the cast of "Gidget" and starred in "Love on a Rooftop." The other answers were the stars of westerns as well. Drury and McClure were in "The Virginian," Garner and Kelly were in "Maverick," Maunder and Stacy were in "Lancer."
2. What was the lead characters' favorite pastime?

Answer: Playing poker

They played poker in at least 30 of the episodes. They were both good and lucky so the game often ended with guns being drawn.
3. "Alias Smith and Jones" was the first series of what prolific creator of TV series such as "Battlestar Galactica," "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," "Magnum P.I.," and "Knight Rider"?

Answer: Glen Larson

Glen Larson has had a long and varied career. He started out in the late 1950s as a member of a musical group call the Four Preps. He has been credited as a writer, producer, creator, director and even composer of TV theme songs. Roddenberry, creator of "Star Trek," wrote the story for the 1st season episode, "The Girl in Boxcar 3." He originally wrote it as an episode of "The Virginian."
4. Roy Huggins was the producer for "Alias Smith and Jones." Using the name John Thomas James, he was involved in another aspect of the series. What was that?

Answer: Writer

Roy Huggins gained early fame as the creator of the popular Warner Brothers western "Maverick" that starred James Garner. Roy Huggins used the pseudonym during Alias Smith and Jones because Warner Bros. wouldn't pay him to both produce and write "Maverick."
5. What was the name of the gang of outlaws that the two heroes once led in "Alias Smith and Jones?"

Answer: Devil's Hole Gang

In the series pilot, gang members were portrayed by Earl Holliman, Dennis Fimple and Bill McKinney. The Wild Bunch was Butch Cassidy's gang. They often hid out at the Hole in the Wall.
6. Hannibal Heyes was the gang leader's name. What were his skills?

Answer: Opening safes and picking locks

One reason given for giving up the criminal life was that the safes were getting too hard to open.
7. Kid Curry was Heyes' partner. What was his claim to fame?

Answer: Fastest gun in the West

Curry's draw was so fast he hardly ever had to shoot. In the pilot episode he tossed a bullet in the air, then drew and shot it, thus having a "gun that could shoot two bullets at the same time."
8. There was $10,000 reward each for Heyes and Curry. What were the crimes with which they were charged?

Answer: Train and bank robbing

Although the bounty posters said "Dead or Alive," the former outlaws claimed they wouldn't be hung. In 1881 the governor of Missouri offered a $10,000 reward for the capture of Jesse James. He was shot in the back by Bob Ford. California outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez had a $15,000 reward on his head and he was hung when captured in 1874.
9. What motivated Heyes and Curry to give up being criminals?

Answer: The governor of Wyoming offered amnesty.

In 1896 Butch Cassidy tried to seek amnesty first from the governor of Utah, who instead sent him to the Union Pacific Railroad, but the meeting between him and the railroad representatives never took place, possibly because of bad weather.
10. When Heyes and Curry decided to seek amnesty they went to Sheriff Lom Trevors. In the pilot episode he was played by what actor who starred in "The Virginian?"

Answer: James Drury

According to the story line, Lom Trevors had been an outlaw before becoming a lawman. Several other real life "lawmen" seemed to have had dual careers. Henry Newton Brown was a cattle rustler and horse thief with Billy the Kid, but later became marshal of Caldwell, KS. The other three actors also played sheriffs on the series.
