Although Michael E. Knight is the actor best known as Tad, Matthew Anton originated the role in 1973. Tad was only ten years old when he debuted on "AMC" and it was revealed he was the child of Opal and Ray Gardner. Jeff Martin and Mary Kennicott were going to adopt Tad but Mary was shot to death. Joe and Ruth, eventually, adopted Tad.

Tad had an addiction to marijuana when he was younger and even stole money from his grandma, Kate Martin, to pay for his addiction. Eventually, Tad kicked the habit and stopped smoking marijuana. However, he got a new addiction and that was to swooning women!

Tad was romantically interested in Hillary Wilson (Langley Wallingford's daughter) but he had a short affair with Dottie Thornton, which resulted in her becoming pregnant with Tad's child. Tad married Dottie but, when she lost the baby, they divorced. Tad, initially, started to date Dottie because Dottie's mother, Edna, paid him to do so to bolster Dottie's self-esteem.

Tad was prepared to marry Hillary and he went to the bank on his wedding day. On that day, robbers came in and robbed the bank. They locked Tad in the vault with Robin McCall. When Hillary saw that Tad was late, she rushed out of the church where she was to marry Tad and ran out into the street as Edna Thornton was driving up. Hillary was okay but told Edna to take her to the bank to get Tad. Tad was released from the vault and he and Hillary married. Scenes from this wedding can be seen on the DVD, "ABC Daytime's Greatest Weddings", that was released in 2004.
