Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the author of the book, 'North and South', on which the BBC adaptation is based?

Answer: Elizabeth Gaskell

Elizabeth Gaskell is also known for her autobiography about fellow authoress and friend, Charlotte Bronte, author of 'Jane Eyre'. Jane Austen wrote many books including 'Pride and Prejudice' and Mary Shelley is famous for having written 'Frankenstein'.
2. Which actor and actress brilliantly brought to life the series' two main characters?

Answer: Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage

Daniela Denby-Ashe is well-known as the idle daughter and mother-of-one in the series, 'My Family', whilst Richard Armitage is the dastardly Guy of Gisborne in the 2006 production of 'Robin Hood'.
3. In the opening scene, where we see Margaret Hale on the train, what is it she holds in her hand along with a book?

Answer: A yellow rose

Leaving her childhood home for Milton, Margaret picks one of the yellow roses that bloom in abundance around it as a memento of the life she leaves behind her. Later in the series, almost all of the roses have gone when the new vicar and his wife cut them down to make playing room for their seven children.
4. What is the name of Margaret's childhood home, and in which part of England's south is it?

Answer: Helstone, in Hampshire

Margaret's love for the home of her childhood is clearly evident in her remark at Edith's wedding reception - "It's the best place on Earth."
5. Whose offer of marriage does Margaret refuse after a misunderstanding at Edith's wedding?

Answer: Henry Lennox

Henry Lennox is Edith's brother-in-law, a lawyer, who loves Margaret but his love is not returned. Misunderstanding Margaret when she makes a remark about how she would like her own wedding day to be, he declares himself after turning up unexpectedly at Helstone, mortified to find he has mistaken her.
6. What are the names of Margaret's cousin and her husband?

Answer: Edith (nee Shaw) and Maxwell Lennox.

Margaret is very close to her cousin, Edith, and writes to her frequently. Margaret attends her wedding to Maxwell Lennox and the reception in Harley Street, Edith's home.
7. To which northern industrial town does Mr. Hale move his family after forsaking the church?

Answer: Milton

Believed to be based upon Manchester when it became a major industrial centre of Victorian England. Such places were bleak and grimy and filled with the down-trodden, desperate for work and housed in sub-standard, hellish living conditions. Child labour was also rife. The Hales actually live in Crampton, an area of Milton.
8. What is Margaret's description of Marlborough Mills as "Hell"?

Answer: "It's white! It's snow white!"

Margaret has walked through Marlborough Mills and is awed by the vast amounts of fluff floating everywhere. It causes her to cough violently and it is difficult to see through clearly. To her unaccustomed eyes, it's like Hell on Earth.
9. What is the name of the master and owner of Marlborough Mills?

Answer: John Thornton

John Thornton is the dark and brooding master who has rebuilt his family's fortune after his father squandered it in wild speculation. He is a hard but fair master but he has a volatile temper.
10. What is produced at Marlborough Mills?

Answer: Cotton

In the early days of its manufacture, cotton was not well-received. Deeply rooted prejudices meant linen held sway but cotton was cheaper and cooler and could be produced faster which aided in the mass-production in ready-to-wear clothes, something that the middle and upper classes frowned upon deeming made-to-measure clothing far superior and the mass-produced only worthy of being worn by the poor.
11. What is the name of the man who Thornton catches smoking on the mill floor, whom he then beats and dismisses?

Answer: Stephens

Fire was a mill owner's worst nightmare. Poorly built mills meant exits were few and fire precautions virtually non-existent. The nature of the materials meant a flame would be taken up in seconds and spread like wildfire, leaving those within little chance of escape in the ensuing panic.

Many workers died in mill fires in Victorian and Edwardian times and many were children. Thornton mentions having to lay out 300 workers bodies on a Yorkshire hillside after a fire caused by an accidental flame, children included.

He was right to be vigilant and angry.
12. What are the names of Thornton's mother and sister?

Answer: Hannah and Fanny

Thornton's mother, Hannah, is a strong-minded woman who has supported and helped her son in everything. His sister, Fanny, is empty-headed and thinks only in terms of wealth, buying and spending. Appearances are everything but she can be something of a drama queen. All the same, she achieves a respectable marriage with a wealthy, older merchant.
13. Whom does Margaret befriend in her first months in Milton, after noticing her at Marlborough Mills?

Answer: Bessy Higgins

On the day Margaret first enters Marlborough Mills and witnesses the beating Thornton gives Stephens for smoking, she also sees Bessy at her loom. Later, she sees her again walking through the cemetery to meet her father and introduces herself, tentatively starting their friendship.
14. How does the former Reverend Hale earn a living in Milton?

Answer: Teaching

Mr. Hale is Oxford educated and a learned man and he earns his living, having left the church, as a tutor and lecturer of the classics and basics. Teaching freelance was a respectable profession but not especially well-paid.
15. What are the two places that Fanny Thornton most wishes to see?

Answer: London and the Alhambra

London was the centre of everything fashionable in Victorian England and to cut a dash there was the dream of every woman. The Alhambra is in Spain, a beautiful example of Moorish architecture and still in existence today.
