Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two regulars led the "Pickin' and Grinnin'" segment?

Answer: Buck Owens and Roy Clark

All of the choices were regulars on the show. Buck Trent was with Porter Wagoner's band for years. Archie Campbell was a veteran comedian and singer on the Grand Ole Opry. Grandpa Jones and Stringbean were also Opry veterans. Jana Jae played the fiddle and was married briefly to Buck Owens. Bobby Thompson was one of the most sought after banjo players in the business.
2. In the early seasons of the show, who had a regular segment where he read a "letter from home"?

Answer: Stringbean

David Akeman (aka Stringbean) was shot and killed along with his wife after he returned home from performing at the Grand Ole Opry. His mistrust of banks was legendary so he kept his cash hidden behind a chimney brick. Not knowing this, the killers only took a chainsaw and some guns from the Akeman home.

The bodies of David and Estelle were found the next day by Stringbean's neighbor and "Hee Haw" cast mate Grandpa Jones. Following an investigation the killers, John and Marvin Brown, were caught, arrested, and convicted. Marvin died in prison. John served 41 years before being paroled in 2014.
3. Junior Samples did "commercials" for a business with the phone number BR-549. What was the business?

Answer: A car lot

Alvin "Junior" Samples was invited to be a cast member on "Hee Haw" after the success of a comedy recording he made called "The Fish Story". He consistently flubbed lines and messed up jokes which in large part was what appealed to audiences. Virtually all of these "outtakes" were left in the show.
4. Who portrayed the barber in a regular barber shop sketch?

Answer: Archie Campbell

Grand Ole Opry veteran Archie Campbell was a natural for this role as it gave him a vehicle for his wonderful story telling skills, especially the "Spoonerisms"--like "The Pea Little Thrigs" and "Rindercella". Archie was also a very good ballad singer, but his vocal skills were used on the shoe to sing "Pffft You Were Gone" with the guests.
5. What was the name of the hotel that was featured in a recurring sketch?

Answer: Empty Arms Hotel

Roy Clark portrayed the desk clerk who always popped up from behind the counter at the hotel. In addition to showcasing his musical and vocal talents every week, Roy also portrayed an effeminate poet named "Claude Strawberry". He was an integral part of the "Hee Haw" cast from the very beginning.
6. Another regular feature of the show was a soap opera parody about a family. What was their name?

Answer: The Culhanes

"The Culhanes" were four cousins: Cousin Clem (played by Gordie Tapp), Cousin Lulu (played by Lulu Roman), Cousin Grandpa (played of course by Grandpa Jones) and Cousin Junior (played by Junior Samples). They sat in chairs, looked at the camera without expression, and delivered their lines in deadpan fashion.
7. What were the call letters of the radio station on "Hee Haw"?

Answer: KORN

Canadian television personality Don Herron portrayed KORN radio announcer Charlie Farquarson on the KORN news sketch. He actually developed the character in his early career on Canadian television.
8. Perky Cathy Baker always closed the show with a short, enthusiastic phrase. What was it?

Answer: That's All!

Cathy Baker's natural blonde bob hairstyle, infectious smile and enthusiasm all lent themselves well to the wholesomeness of the show. Originally from Edinburg, Texas she went to work for her husband's law office in Orange, Virginia after the show ended.

She has made occasional appearances on the RFD Network where reruns of "Hee Haw" have been shown. She also appeared on a "Hee Haw" reunion show which also aired on the RFD Network.
9. One of the fixtures on the "Hee Haw" set was a lazy looking basset hound nicknamed "The Wonder Dog". Three different dogs filled this role during the course of the show. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Rex

The dog was ever present on the "Hee Haw" set, but he was especially prominent during the "Moonshiner" skits as he fit the lazy mood perfectly. Charlie McCoy's bluesy harmonica music provided a perfect musical backdrop as well.
10. In the summer of 1969, "Hee Haw" debuted on CBS as a summer replacement for which variety show?

Answer: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour

In an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of TV shows such as "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction as well as the increasing popularity of country music CBS aired "Hee Haw" as a summer replacement for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"--a popular but often controversial show. "Hee Haw" proved to be such a hit it would air for two more seasons on the network before being canceled as part of their "rural purge" as one network executive called it.

But it would live on in syndication.
